Names you love but can't use

Thread Starter
I'm copying this from August ddc which is copying from another. But I think it's kinda cool.

List the names you or dp really like but can't use because it was veto'd by you or your dp, or you know someone with the name, or you just don't have the nerve, or it doesn't go with your last name or nationality, or you are having your last child and will not be using a name for that sex, etc, blah, blah, blah....

I'll start.....

(haven't been thinking about girl names)

boy names:
linus
dave
andrew
esteban
benjamin
killian
gavin
charlie

Jack
Ben
Colin
Ian
James
Kiera
Caileigh
Catherine
Sierra

Most of these names we can't use because we have friends who have kids with these names. A couple of them Dh said we can't use because there's no way he's naming his daughter after a star(let) that he likes!

my dh says no to everything. some of the ones I like that he doesn't are
Jonah
Jared
Jaron
Ori
Oren
there's more I can't remember.

and then there's the family names that we can't use if being similar to family members' names is an issue:
Nathan
Nathaniel
Elijah
Daniel
etc.

We're giving our daughter an incredibly long hyphenated last name, so we made an effort to find a one-syllable first name we both liked (we settled on Joy). But I love the following "longer" names (and others we just didn't choose):
Helen
Margaret
Stella
Violet
Celia
Eleanor
Iris
Nora

Imogene

Lenore

Lilian

love jack/jackson

but, my ds is zach and that would be waaay too confusing!

We have two long ethnic sounding last names, hyphenated...so first names have to be short and sweet. And our dd's name is Laia, so unfortunately that means some names I adore are too "close" to use despite loving them. And a few others were too "unusual" to stay on the list despite really liking them too:

Girls:
Eleanor
Linnea
Lyra
Lorica
Maia
Maris
Raven
Rain
Rois (it's pronounced "Rose")
Tamar
Teomare
Tristan (DH, and honestly most people, feel this is a boy's name but I love it for a girl!)

Boys:
Artus
Benedict
Bran
Corbin
Corbet
Corwin
Lucius or Lucian
Matthais
Morgon (DH feels this one is strictly a "girl name")
Owen
Taran
Thaddeus

There's only a few for us...

Geoffrey was my #1 boy's name (from my great-uncle Fred, who was "Ephraim" in hebrew), but my SIL is now engaged to a Geoffrey.

Devorah - DH vetoed it; he knew & loathed a Devorah in high school.

Arin/Erin/Aaron/Aron - We both have evil exes with the name.

We seem to be drawn to names beginning with E for some odd reason. We've tried finding other names, but they just don't call to us. The names are predonminantly Gaelic, which works well with our last name.

We do like the name Embry, but as we have a last name starting with O', that would be a bad combination - Embry O (embryo)

Oh I almost forgot...

I love the names Thalia and Hypatia. But apparently DH knows these two names primarily as belonging to two porn stars. So he nixed those from the list back when we were trying to come up with dd1's name.

But to me, Thalia was a muse and Hypatia the famous librarian of Alexandria.

I really shouldn't admit publically that I know exactly who he means with Hypatia, and it was my first thought too...

As long as it's not Seymour Butt or the infamous Alicia (I saw her perform in Boston once) then I'm good.

I still love the name Hypatia though. She was a scientist, philosopher, poet, and all round kick butt ancient babe...as well as the last librarian of Alexandria (the most famous library of it's day, and probably would have remained so if it hadn't been burned to the ground).

I wonder how it became a porn name? It doesn't strike me as the sort of name you come up with when playing those "what would your X name be" games!

So now I know why DH vetoed Thalia!!! I love that name, too.

Hypatia (the porn star) I recognized. : (Either porn-Hypatia is more famous than porn-Thalia, or else I'm guessing she is more recent as I'm a boring ol' suburban mom nowadays...)

How odd.... I haven't heard of either of them.... and I use to be a clerk in an Adult "book" store.:

I've even met some stars who came in for "meet and greets" and that is why Chloe has been vetoed from our baby name list.

I love the names Jack, Micah and Sam, but our last name has "jack" in it, and when combined with Micah and Samuel one tends to think of some celebrities!

My recently departed and dearly beloved grandmother's name -- Amelia.

My best friend named her DD that. Anybody else, I'd say screw it and use the name anyway, but I just can't.
