A grass roots movement in the state of IL has been working very hard on
getting a bill passed to make licensure of midwifery a reality for our
state. As most of you are aware, midwives cannot legally attend a home
birth. We are trying to change this.
We are very close. Right now the bill is in Registration and Regulation
Committe of the House. We have been informed that they intend to kill
the bill. We are working on writing letters to the committee members.
Someone from Illinois Families For Midwives will be printing out these
letters and taking them to each committee member early next week.
Below you will find a sample letter to the committee. PLEASE write
your own or just change the appropriate information in the sample and send
your own letter in. The more letters the better.
I realize not everyone agrees with homebirth, but we are asking for the
chance to make homebirth a safe choice for everyone in the state of
Illinois who chooses to have a homebirth.

My name is __________, and I live in _________, Illinois. I have 3
beautiful children, 2 of whom were born at home. I am not one of your
constituents, but it is my understanding that you represent all the
people, the whole state of Illinois, when working in a committee.
Please allow Senate Bill 385, the Midwifery Licensure Act, Senator
Haine's bill to get to the floor so that my Representative can weigh in.
I really want my Representative to be able to vote on this bill.
Each year 800-1000 families in the state of Illinois choose to have a
home birth. We are depending on you to help make this a safe choice. We
need your help to make sure that families in Illinois have access to all
safe maternity care options.
