compensating nutritionally for vitamins in eggs/dairy

Hi,

I was just diagnosed with a strong egg and dairy allergy, and a moderate reation to wheat/gluten. Now I am struggling to feed myself and my children (it was advised to take these foods out of their diets as well - naturopath said the egg and dairy allergy tend to be hereditary - we are testing the kids individually next week though). How can I compensate for the vitamin/mineral make-up of the milk/eggs for myself and my children? Does anybody know of a nutrionally similar substitute (homemade, non-soy) for dairy? Thanks! I'm really floundering trying to prepare our meals (my children are not into greens very much).

Hmmm. Not if you aren't willling to do soy. Rice milk is okay, but you still need protein and fat. I would avoid any nut milks as it is a big allergen. I haven't worried about compensating nutritionally for eggs at all.

I love using coconut milk to substitute for dairy. It probably doesn't compare that well nutritionally, but at least I can make yogurt with it, and everyone loves it.

I would probably do coconut milk and bone broth instead of dairy, and maybe add a little more meat to your diet instead of the eggs if you're eating a lot of them. Eggs are the one food I really wish we could have because of their nutritional profile You might also consider doing a food trial of the eggs (at least for your kids) after a month or so off them, regardless of test results, to see if they truly do react to them or not. You could try inputting the typical meals from a few days (with eggs) into www.fitday.com, then input a few days without, and see what the nutrient changes are. Then you could figure out what other foods are high in those nutrients and work on adding them to your diet.

We are dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free....it can be tough at times!
We used to use rice milk, but just switched over to hempmilk, which cooks and tastes better, and has lots more vitamins in it. We use the original for cooking and drink the vanilla (it's great in coffee ). I also use Kirkman's calcium powder, which tastes like powdered sugar. I sprinkle it on pancakes, and put it in muffins, etc. I also use Nutribiotic Rice Protein (vanilla) and sprinkle it in my little one's hempmilk to boost her protein. I also add it in her cereal, anywhere I can hide it! I also use a lot of oils to get fat into her diet...she loves a mashed banana whipped with a tablespoon of coconut or olive oil. It's like pudding when you whip it long enough. Avocados are also good for much needed fat! Avocados and banana puddings are another favorite
Ricera has just come out with a rice yogurt, which we haven't tried yet, but are very excited about! Some Whole Foods are now selling it, unfortunately mine hasn't gotten it in yet. That's another option!

I hope that helps!
