HB with a Fibroid?

Does anyone know if i will be able to have a homebirth after having found a uterine fibroid?

I did some research and while i can't find anything definite, i did find some studies linking fibroids to an increased risk of post partum hemmoraging. The only HB midwife in my area is (understandably) conservative in who she will work with and i am really afraid i will risk out of my HB plans.

FWIW, i am still TTC #2 and dealing with some secondary infertility issues. Thats how the fibroid was found in the first place. It is just that i have dreamed of a HB since i had DD 2 1/2 yrs ago.

At one of my first appts with my MW for this pregnancy she suspected I might have fibroids (I had an u/s and don't). She assured me there was no complication from a fibroid at the top of the uterus and it would not be any concern at all. She said it's very common and had me ask the u/s tech specifically about them as they're so common to not always be mentioned. Pregnancy can cause them to grow, but as long as they don't interfere with the baby's path out, from what I can tell, it's a non-issue.

Blessings in TTC and getting the birth you want!

Unless the fibroid is so large that it would prevent subinvolution (the uterus cramping down after the birth and stopping bleeding), it should be fine. I suspect that your fibroid is small. Many women, especially as they approach their 40's have fibroids. Some fibroids are estrogen dependent, so they can grow during pregnancy - but if they cause no problems for the women, when they reach menopause, they can shrink. I have seen surgery done to remove fibroids in younger women with large or many fibroids. They are usually having problems related to getting pregnant.

They found a very small one in me during an u/s, and they are keeping an eye on it. It had me a little worried, but I have read about it and talked to my dr and midwife about it, and it sounds like they are very common and nothing to worry about most of the time. My m/w said she actually delivered a baby where the mother had one the size of a grapefruit! Everything turned out fine. ETA: Of course, I suggest getting professional advice, but I did want to let you know that having one doesn't necessarily rule out home birth. I hope it all goes well!

Fibroids can be large or small and they can be on the inside or outside of the uterus. A large fibroid can interfere with the uterus' ability to contract and stop bleeding after birth. Also a fibroid that is near the cervix can interfere with the baby's descent. An ultrasound can be helpful in ruling out these concerns.

Good luck!

At 39, I had 3 good size fibroids that caused no pain nor problems during a twin pregnancy. HBAC'd full term with no problems.
