A friend has just been put on bed rest, she had some spotting and maybe an ultrasound, not sure. She was told that the amniotic sac has detached or is separating from the uterine wall. Is this common? Would an ultrasound detect this? Is bed rest the best thing? Any feedback would be good- is this the same as an abruption or can it happen without the placenta detaching?

What you're speaking of is a placental abruption and the bleeding is referred to as a subchorionic hemorrhage. The "chorion" is what makes up the placenta (and part of the membranes) so the bleeding is between the placenta and the uterine wall. The vessels that are separated bleed because they've been torn. This is seen on ultrasound and bedrest is usually to ensure the bleeding stops. Depending on the extent of the abruption, activities can be increased.

Are there suggestions such as herbs to make placentas stay attached and water bags stay strong? She had a miscarriage a few months ago. I didn't know abruption could happen this early.

My friend had a mild sub-chorionic hemmorrage w/her first... but wasn't put on bed rest, nor had any spotting... I think they put her on progesterone supplements. I think she may have only been like 8 weeks along, though. The baby is now 15 mos, so it all worked out. I hope things go ok for your friend!

The placental formation happens pretty early on so this is a developmental thing with the chorionic villi burrowing in to that mushy top layer of uterine lining, rather than a "uterus not sticky enough" thing. I'm sure there are some herbal experts out there who could recommend something but I have no idea if they will work.
