DH's medical insurance for our family is an EPO plan. I looked it up on the insurance website and it stands for "Exclusive Provider Organization" and basically functions like an HMO, so in other words, I can't use an out-of-network provider. I'm wanting to do a homebirth, and according to one midwife I've been in touch with, all homebirth midwives are out-of-network. So does this mean there is NO chance of it being covered? What am I going to do? I can NOT afford to pay out of pocket.... our last hospital birth cost us a total of $10 (because the insurance is great otherwise, if you're using an in-network provider). DS1's birth cost $1000, which was the deductible under our old insurance. New insurance didn't require a deductible for maternity services. This is why DH sees it as a sweet deal now, and I know he will not go for a homebirth if it is going to be expensive.
