GA for toddler Surgery in morning

My almost 2 year old is going to be put into a "twilight" sleep in a couple of hours at the dentist. I haven't been able to sleep all night. I was told not to nurse after 11 pm, but after doing so research I decided to nurse a little longer than that. She last nursed at 3:30 am and I am feeling a little stressed out about nursing her with only 3.5 hours before her anesthesia appt. Please tell me it is ok! I have no idea what will happen at the appt, they are trying to "save" her two top front teeth and then she needs fillings in her molars. Her teeth have been discolored and crumbly from the moment they came in (late, around 13 months). They started chipping soon after eruption, so here we are today. I have a wonderful ped (Dr. Jay Gordon) who supports our decision for the dental work, but of course I am terrified! Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Dont worry about nursing her bm digests super fast so it wont be a issue.

I will be in your shoes sooner or later my ds needs extensive dental work done and it will have to be done under GA at the local childrens hospital. It should have already been done but our insurance changed and we just dont have the $500 out of pocket up front to pay it right now.

My ds's teeth also came in and started chipping very shortly after. He had the top 4 pulled when he was 2y 2m old in the office with just a local anesthesia since they were horribly abcessed and had to come out right then.

I wish I knew why his teeth came in bad but havnt figured it out other than gentics. My oldest brother also lost his front 4 teeth because of weak enamal.

Thanks for responding. I wish I could have gotten some rest tonight because we have a long day ahead of us! DD is so small, she is only 23 lbs. My ped said it was fine, but I am still scared. The appt is in office, that seems to be the way they do it around here. I have been reading that some moms couldn't nurse for 24 hours after the child's procedure. Why? That terrifies me! DD gets most of her calories from nursing still and I don't see how she could not nurse for that long.

I think sometimes they are afraid the sucking will pull the fillings loose like drinking with a straw but honestly the 2 are not similar in how they work so I dont see how it could be a problem. If it were my little one I would nurse after and many mom's here who's lo's have had dental work nurse right there after.

I bet by the time you read this your babe will have nursed already, but I just wanted to chime in with the others in saying that from everything I've read nursing is aok after the dental work.

I hope things are going well!! Let us know how it went

Well, it was by far one of the hardest days of my life! DD did great with the anasthesia, but it was really emotionally trying. It turns out that they couldn't save her top front teeth, so they pulled them. She needed 2 crowns and a bunch of fillings. She doesn't have all of her top teeth, it turns out she was born with two less teeth (both baby and permanent) than most people. Because of this, she has a HUGE gap where her teeth used to be because there aren't any other teeth in the front. The dentist made me really upset, she blamed it all on nursing and then told me I couldn't nurse for 4-5 days and I may as well wean her. DH and I were in shock at this news and I started crying right away. Well, we were so lucky that there was another mom in the waiting room waiting for her dd's procedure. I ended up talking to her for a while. It was her dd's 3rd procedure. She told me not to worry and that we could nurse as soon as we wanted, that she has had oral surgeons tell her that it is fine and it just seems that not everyone has all the right information. So we are nursing!

One of the hardest things is that dd is so much happier. I think her poor little teeth have been hurting her for a long time. She is small, and now she is suddenly eating more than she ever has! Anyway, all in all it was worth it.

That sucks that the dentist was so misinformed on nursing. I am sorry you had to deal with that along with all the other stuff.

My ds was also in a lot of pain after having his front 4 pulled he started to do much better including sleeping.

I hope you will be able to find another dentist since that one seems to be such a UA violation.

I wish things had gone better for you both. At least it's done, and what's done is done is done.

That dentist sounds like a bully.
