how concerned should i be...

...that my urine is cloudy?? (sorry, tmi!)

i've had uti symptoms in the past, all of which were gotten rid of by drinking tons of water and taking cranberry pills. never cloudy urine, but definitely all the other symptoms (burning when i pee, feeling like i have to pee and not being able to, stinky/bright urine, etc). the only time this didn't work was when i was in india this summer; although the symptoms eventually went away clearly the infection didn't because i ended up with a kidney infection in the fall. the weird thing about the kidney infection was i had had NO urinary tract symptoms for a good month or so before the kidney symptoms kicked in.

anyway, the big dramatic end to that story is that while in the hospital we found out i only have one "normal" kidney -- the other one is tiny, and this was likely a congential issue that has never affected my life in any way -- so i was advised to take uti symptoms very seriously since we don't want my one kidney to get infected again. so i've been taking cranberry pills and drinking 128oz of water a day ever since, to try to avoid utis in the first place.

BUT morning sickness has made it harder to take the pills and to drink as much water (i'm down to a meager 64oz a day, usually) and in the past two or three days i have noticed cloudy urine once or twice a day, usually when i first wake up. by the end of the day, it's clear. i'm forcing myself to drink more water and take those pills, and i also left a message for my midwife. the funny thing is i have NONE of my normal uti symptoms besides this. is it possible that this is no big deal or should i be nervous right now? the message i left with my m/w stressed that it wasn't an "emergency," but if she doesn't get back to me quickly, should i be pushing to come in sooner and have her check this out?

My first thought is that maybe the cloudiness is actually CM that is also expelled while you're peeing. I know I have a lot of excess CM compared to when I'm not pregnant. Could that be possible?

UTI during pregnancy

Never hurts to check things out! My mw told me that symptoms of UTI's during pregnancy can be different than UTI symptoms you have when NOT pregnant, so it maybe worthwhile to check in out just in case. Good luck

I would test it, you can even buy teh strips in the drugstore (but they are not as complete as teh doc ones) I think teh brand is even called UTI.. my pee is cloudier in the morning a lot too but , with your history, you can't be too careful..

I also wonder if it's cervical mucous coming out into the bowl in the morning. Sometimes it pools at night and then comes out when we squat. Is that a possibility you think????

i think it could definitely be cm, but i'm not sure. i definitely have more than usual. also *thought* i was coming down with a yeast infection a little while ago, too, but i've never had one so i wasn't sure and that seemed to go right away with some acidophilus...it seems like everything is sort of "off" down there right now.

sorteep, what a good option! i didn't know they had those in the drugstore. that would really help at least give me a sense of whether i should be worried.

do you know where i would find them, ie in what aisle/with what products?

thanks, ladies!

Also, if you don't have a UTI, it might be your prenatal vitamins if you're taking them. Mine have a huge label saying they discolor urine and feces.

FWIW my urine was cloudy all last pregnancy and the midwives never found a UTI or any other reason for it. It's doing the same thing this time around. I actually find it kind of comforting now, since it's a pregnancy symptom for me, and one of the painless kinds of symptoms. However, you should probably mention it to your care provider, and maybe they will have some ideas.

i would get it testes, only cuz

1. it could me more serious for you than another

2. UTI in pregancy are more serious than not preggo anyway

doesn't hurt to run to MW and pee in a cup.

I too used to get UTI's all the time, almost chronically for a few months once. I am a lot better with water now, but since pregnancy have also had the cloudy urine, and with no other symptoms I chalk it up to be an increase in discharge and "stuff goin' on" up there.

It doesn't hurt to test for UTI, definitely, but I bet it's just discharge/cervical mucous.

Good luck!

hey!

thanks for checking in with me. i played phone tag with my midwife on monday so i decided to buy a home test just to set my mind at ease. it was negative. i finally got in touch with my midwife on tuesday, and she seemed unconcerned, and said that unless anything changes she'll just see me at my appointment (and do another test then) at the beginning of june.

Great news! I support the cm theory as an explanation of the cloudy pee.

I would get checked out pronto.
UTI = uterine irritability = more contractions = increased risk of miscarriage

ok...this treatment is not for the faint of heart. With UTI (I'm a chronic UTI victim since my sons birth where they cath'd me) get 2 large turnips...wash & put in a pot of water...boil it down...add more water & boil it down...add more water & boil until you get an applesauce consistency. Strain & drink. It's so NASTY but it'll kick that UTI's butt in no time flat. I live on cranberry pills also. I've also found that if I take them out of the gelcaps & dump on the back of my tongue I can keep them down much better. I'm vegan but I will go gelatin when it's a have a UTI or no UTI. Screw the horse's & their hooves at that point! Sorry fellow veggies! Have I been kicked out of the club house now?....
