I've never birthed in a hospital, and to be honest I'd rather give birth in a snow bank than start now. So for us, the choice was the local freestanding birth center where we had DS, or a homebirth. We're chosing a homebirth because:

-at home, I can get into the waterbirth tub when ever the contractions become painful, not when it's time to go to the birth center and after the tub has filled.

-I don't have to worry about my water breaking all over the upholstery or getting stuck in rush hour traffic, and dh doesn't have the stress of driving either way!

-I can snuggle my baby in my own bed and wrap her in her own soft blankets the moment she's born. I can have something yummy to eat ready for us after the birth (Matzoh balls.... mmmmn, num!).

-I can spend the money we'd have to pay for the "facility fee" which isn't covered by insurance on babymooning supplies and fancy dipes and carriers.

because it's the most private, primal, vulnerable experience a woman can have...at least that's how it seems for me...if i had a third child, i'd probably want a homebirth and very little testing etc along the way in pregnancy. dh probably would feel uncomfortable about that, given that i'm 48. but chances are slim we'll need to cross that bridge anyway.

ramblingly,

Cause I want to be the center of attention

However, I want to only be the center of attention to people I have chosen to share my birth. I feel that I am in a better position to make decisions without the pressures of an unfamiliar place and staff.

What everyone else said and really,

Because it just feels right.

Because the hospital feels wrong.

Currently reading The Birth House by Ami McKay. Not all midwives are like the original one in the book, but the book sure tells the story of how/why birth became a medical procedure instead of a natural part of life.

Because I get to surround myself ONLY with people I know and trust and who know and care about me and my baby in more than a statistical way.

Theres nothing like giving birth and crawling into my OWN clean bed and resting.

Its so calm and peaceful being at home.

The idea of hospital birth scared the shit out of me!
