the state has a high risk neonatal transport system- that consists of teams that either by ground or helio transport will pick up a very sick baby-- we have many places that have no nenatal services at all-and as it stood last yes even in places where there is a neonatal hospital it is approprate for us to call in for specialized transport- a ground crew that would have a neonatal intensive care nurse with drugs and equipment... and a perimedic or EMTs with specialized experience/training to support that nurse - they will have better training --
we may have to coordinate with local transport or meet them at a small local hospital landing pad- but there are rural enough places that if we have GPS coordinates they will land at the nearest pad(fire house)- or in a field conditions permitting unfortunately if they can't make it by air then ground transport will be picking a baby up at a local hospital and the level of ineptness at some of the hospitals is astounding -- I know that there are population bases big enough that more than just our babies are ending up there on occasion not to mention any other problem/accident with an infant, so I don't understand how it is they are so un-educated or prepared.

I did an internet search and it looks like your state Mass- has 2 hospitals that have transport teams but only one with neonatal unit- find out about it and also find out if it would ever be possible to call them direct and then call- a local 911 services to coordinate with this effort-- (this is another place where being able to give report is good) -- the thing is we have more advanced skills than may folks on ambulances and more experience- so if and when we hand off it is actually to someone of lesser ability- even if they are backed by a doc somewhere on the radio-- if you don't have to risk someone not knowing approprate neonatal care/procedures- when we call a transport team for our region we usually actually talk to a neonatologist or a neonatal nurse-- they have training sessions as to when and how to call and what they want to know from you--(they do the same things for hospitals and ambulance folks)
