the RH antibody shot?? I spoke with my Dr today and I guess I get it at 28 weeks and then again right before we leave the hospital after giving birth. It scares me a little though....the thought that just because of my blood type, my husband's blood type could kill our baby.

yup, I got it with my son and also when I miscarried.

DH and I are both O- so any child we have will be O- so I don't get the shot.

Yup, I've had the shot with both of my girls. However, you don't necessarily have to have the shot before you leave the hospital. You only need it if your baby is +. If the baby is - you won't need it. Both my girls are + so I had to have the shot both times... but thankfully that means they won't need to deal with this later.

PLEASE reseasrch this! My midwife won't even give the prenatal shot, because she believes so strongly it can harm the baby. Just the postnatal shot (after testing the baby to see if it is + or-) is really all you need.

If you decide to do it, you have to SPECIALLY order (your doc might not even know how, you might have to do the legwork) a MERCURY-FREE bersion...the regular ones have lots of mercury.

Please research this.

I got the shot when i was pregnant and after birth with my son but since researching it I also heard that it can be bad for the baby so I will only be getting it postnatal shot this time. I also agree to reasearch it before you get it.

I have done LOTS of research (my doc told me about it the first time I ever went to the gyno at age 18) and if I don't get it and my baby is + then it increases my chances of miscarriage in the future exponentially......I will look into the non-mercury based ones though.

Sorry fishie, but the way you speak...you sounded very unsure and it seemed like you were new to the concept and not someone who has done tons of research....for example, the way you said "I guess i get it at..." sounds to me like you were unfamiliar with the whole situation and it was all news to you....but that just must be your personal spekaing style, i guess. Or else just my interpretation, LOL!

If you have done your research, you know that the difference in sensitization rates between getting the postnatal shot only versus both shots is not a huge difference, that most other countries ONLY give the postnatal shot, and that there is definitely a risk inviolved with getting the shot regardless, but certainly prenatally there is a risk not only to you, but to the baby. In my experience, once women are completely informed of the facts, they almost always choose to get only the postnatal shot, because they believe the tiny difference in possible sensitization is worth eliminating the risk to the baby by declining the prenatal shot. now, if after being completely informed, you have decided the opposite, that is certainly your decision to make, albeit a decision that obviously, several of us who've already posted would find surprising.

I agree....the post-natal only would be the ideal....I will discuss that with my Dr

My reason for saying "I guess" is because when I MENTIONED it to my doc (he didnt even bring it up) they said well, WE give it at 28 weeks here. My reading has given varied dates.

im o- and had the pre and post natal rh shot with my 1st < i was once ignorant and didnt question things of this nature >

last year i miscarried and got the rh shot about a month later, then was later informed i would need to talk to my ob whenever i had another child because that one may or may not have been effective.

im pregnant now, and my husband is a+, i plan on having an UP and UC.
and have no desire to get a rh shot at any point. < though i anticipate this being my last BC, id like to adopt >

if anyone has some info or links about dangers < and how prevelant they are > of not getting the rh shot id love to see them.

I'm in this due date club too but planning on being an observer till I get to my 2nd trimester mostly. Toyarmy, I'd consider having your antibody levels checked, if you miscarried after 7w there's a chance you are carrying Rh antibodies now that could cause major issues for this baby. There is obstetric interventions and monitoring that could decrease this or most likely you're not antibody +ve and don't have to worry, but checking would mean you'd know if this baby was at risk and could consider increased monitoring if needed.

(As well as expecting my third, I'm a family doc who attends births and cares for pregnant women in a primary care setting)
