Spell it out for me: Becoming a CNM in NY State

I'm going back to school for Nursing. This is still just my associates. I want to be a certified nurse midwife. I don't want to move out of my area, even to study. There are no midwifery schools here. I was thinking of going through Frontier. So, spell it out for me... what's this going to look like? Timeline it. How long until I can get liscensure and practice?

SUNY has a CNM program I think... have you checked it out? It totally depends on your life and how fast you can slog through it. I'm pretty sure NY has the requirement of B.S. in Nursing, Masters in Midwifery. So full time with nothing else on your plate I'm guessing an absolute minimum of 3-4 years until you're totally practicing on your own. Assuming you get your numbers and pass your boards, etc.

The only reason I know this is b/c for me to practice in NY licensed as a CPM I would have to have had pretty much the same exact training as you. Weird.

sorry to jump on this thread but can someone also explain the process to become a CM in NYS. I've heard there is a program for non-nurses/direct entry midwives to get certified in NY as a CM but can't find where that program is offered. Since we are thinking about moving there, I would love to know the process. Thanks so much

SUNY Downstate is the only place I know of that is offering the CM right now - I thought Stony Brook did as well, but I can't find it on their website. Your best bet might be to take a look at their website.

NYS licensure

I'm certainly not the bible on this, but I've looked into it too. To my knowledge, SUNY-Downstate in Brooklyn is the only university currently offering the CM. The are several universities that offer an RN to CNM program for nurses who do not have a bachelor's. I'm thinking of Columbia and Stonybrook, but there may be others. There are many post-grad CNM programs for those who do have a BSN.

To respond to the original query, it really all depends on how long it takes you to complete your clinicals. The academic timeline you can figure out based on Frontier's 4 or 8 semester option. But fulfilling your attended birth requirements really depends on what sorts of opportunities your preceptor(s) offer. I'm not sure whether Frontier requires you to find your own preceptor or not. Also not certain whether they require you to have a year or two working as an RN before you start. But you probably have checked all that out already.
