If a woman gets iv abx for GBS+, what are the chances of thrush? Preventing?

I have a client who is GBS+ and planning to get 2 rounds of IV abx during labor (the protocol here), and she's concerned about thrush. First of all, will she definitely get thrush? Is there a way she can prevent it?

I don't think she is willing to forego the abx -- plus I think the hospital would go ape and probably get a court order for a spinal tap if she did. So I don't think that's an option for her.

different studies say various things about flora- yeast and GBS are compatable and in some studies 50-80% of GBS + women have yeast colonization- so IV antibiotics are designed to change flora in order to prevent GBS infection of the newborn- but it is not designed to get rid of yeast- with the rest of the flora killed off a good precentage of the time it is going to leave yeast an open field to grow in--
not much to do to actually prepare ahead of time - but after and for weeks after live culture foods and possibly a lactobacillus supplement and she should consider using a drug to knock it down

Yup. Just anecdotal, not scientific at all, but pretty much I've seen what mwherbs just said. Five out of six of the mom's I've attended who have had antibiotics for GBS have gotten NASTY cases of thrush. In the end they've used probiotics like crazy as well as using combinations of Dr. Newman's protocol for thrush and drugs.

Almost everyone I know who have had abx has gotten thrush. I would tell her to avoid sugars and refined grains and really up her probiotics. Before and after. I hope she ends up ok. Thrush is horrible.

I've been there with thrush with my first birth & have gone on & successfully prevented it twice with c-births that had abx. I get the liquid refrigerated plain acidophilus and take a tbspn-full every few hours for week before the birth & 3 weeks after. It might not work for everyone, but it can help.

I haven't seen it in the dozen or so women with IV a/b I've attended - either nipple or vaginal. I've seen it pop up post partum a few times with no "risk" factors.
