Sebastian Dee- Birthing Center Turned Hospital Transfer, All Natural

Six Days overdue, I took Castor oil at 11:45 am and again at about 12:30 (about 1tbs each). At about 4:00 I noticed I was having a lot of discharge, and then it really picked up. I soaked through a panty liner then a pad, and decided to call my midwife. I asked her if it was possible that my water was breaking in small bursts and she said yes, and to come in. So, I went into the birthing center. She checked me, confirmed that my water had broken, stripped my membranes and then we set up to meet later on that evening. My husband met me at the center, and since we drove seperatly, we drive home alone. While driving home I started feeling real contractions, it was so hard to get home like that!

I got home around 5:30 and immediatly went into hard labor. I tried timing my contractions, and they were less than 2 mins apart. I decided to get into the bath tub to relive the pain. I had Nathan call my midwife and doula and told them they were too close together and I needed to get back to the birthing center. I laid in the bathtub waiting for my doula to get to my house. I tried drinking some beer to slow things down, but it didn't work. By the time I got out of the tub Nova (my doula) had arrived. I was already begging to go to the hospital to get an epidural! I was in so much pain. She was great at calming me down as soon as she got here and convinced me it was time to leave. We met with my midwife at the birthing center after the longest car ride of my life. I laid down on the bed, but it was too much. My midwife wanted to check me to see how much I was dialted- a 4. I begged to get into the tub. They filled it up, and it was sooo nice to get in. I labored in the tub for a while, maybe an hour or so, and got out and went on the bed. My contractions came hard a fast and I had to get back in the tub. I was back in the tub for, I don't know how long, and got an urge to push with my contractions. It was overwhelming. I was trying to push, and my midwife wanted to check me again. She told me there was some cervical lip still in the way and moved it out of the way. OUCH! I kept pushing for a while, and they had me move onto the bed to monitor his heart.

I got onto the bed and tried pushing in many different positions. His heartrate was dropping with the contractions and they thought they umbilical cord might be cutting off his oxygen (we learned later that was the case). They wanted me to get him out ASAP. I tried, and push as hard and as much as I could, but he wasn't coming out. They decided to call the ambulance for a hospital transfer.

They got there really fast, but said that road construction was really bad to the hospital that they wanted to take me to, and we had to go to the closer one. Well.. yeah! I had never ridden in an ambulance before, and the moment was very surreal. I was trying to stay calm, I knew everything would be OK. The midwife gave me a shot to stop my contractions, but it didn't work. They wouldn't let me push through a contraction until I got to the hospital, and that was even worse than pushing! It is almost impossible to fight that urge to push! He was already crowning when they transfered me.

I got to St. Marks Hospital and into the delivery room. The doctor was there waiting for me, they strapped my legs up on the stirrups and I was able to push again. They wanted him out FAST, his heartrate was dropping to almost nothing. I pushed as hard as I could, or at least I thought so. The Dr then threatened to give me an episiotomy to get him out quicker. I screamed "NOOOOOO!!!" and he came out with that push! Then the rest of him on the next one.

They put him on my belly, but only for a few seconds before taking him to get checked out. I tore when his shoulders came out, and had to get stitched up, so I couldn't hold him anyway. My placenta was delivered very shortly afterwards, but it was dragging my uterus down with it. The doctor had to seperate them, that was sooooo painful. I screamed like never before.

I got stitched up, and my baby was brought to me. He was so beautiful and alert. I put him to my breast and it took a few tries, but he latched right on. He was born all natural (even though I was begging for an epidural the whole time), at 1:20 am weighing 6 lbs 11 oz, one week over due. We are totally in love with him!
