Sealants?

History (as short as possible):

Margie's top front four teeth started wearing away as soon as they came out, about 8 months old. She was diagnosed with an enamel defect. True to the diagnosis, it effected none of her other teeth. We got crowns to protect those teeth. She had several checkups with absolutely no other problems until a few months after I began giving her the cheapie vitamins from Henry's. I knew I was having a hard time brushing them off her teeth and sure enough she had several cavities on the bite surface of her teeth. At first I wanted her teeth sealed because I thought she must just have "bad teeth" and I later put two and two together. Anyway, the insurance would not cover sealants on baby teeth so I decided to wait and see which has been a good thing since she hasn't had any other problems since. Therefore, I'm confidant her dental issues are confined to these two instances.

We left her dental appt today with yet another good report, however they want to put sealants on her two new permanent molars. I'd like to know the pros and cons from the experts here before I commit. I'm not against it if the pros outweigh the cons, but I wonder how necessary it is since her teeth seem to be very healthy and good. FTR, it is covered 100% by insurance now.

Advice? Experience? Information?

TIA!

I would go with the sealants. They are either glass ionomer cement (very bio-compatible!) or more likely a composite material. My mom was offered sealants for me, and said no. So instead I have a bunch of amalgam-filled cavities. (expensive to remove!)

If your child gets cavities in the molars, they will probably get a composite filling.
