New Movie: The business of Being Born

Hi -
Have any of you heard about the new movie that Ricki Lake did about the problem with birth practices in America? It is being debuted at that big film festival in NYC soon....

Anyway, my cousin Julia (who happens to be an actress/model in NYC) just gave birth to her son in June last year and Ricki's video crew was partnering with my cousin's MW office/birth center to make some of the video. When I was at a family event a few weeks ago - my cousin told me about the movie and it sounds absolutely amazing. She has seen it because she's in it - and I can't wait till it comes out for everyone to see.....

It got some great reviews from what I can find about it online.
They also have a website - but when I went to it a few days ago - it wasn't working right, I guess it's still in the process of being made - but I did sign up for their e-mail newsletter. Evidently Ricki had her 2nd baby at home - and her first in a hospital. The reason for the video is to show normal births and tell about how medical interventions are not always neccesary.

here's the website:

or you can google The Business of Being Born (which is the title of the movie)

yes, this is a very big deal, and I for one, am thrilled! I can't wait to see it. (Although, as a mom of two little ones I never get to films, especially indie ones...) We're in the birth video biz, too, and am REALLY excited when a "name" actor takes it to the streets. She's famous: built-in publicity!

Congrats to Julia! And best wishes to you, mama!

Jodi, is your cousin Mayra or Maya? This was the model in the film. Everyone commented on how beautiful she is!!!

So, yes, I saw the film. The homebirth midwife was my midwife 10 years ago. Her birth is also portrayed and it is hilarious!

I thought the film was great. Oddly, there was no mention of VBAC, and I don't why that was. One of the OBs in the film made some ignorant comment about homebirth like, "Um, how do midwives monitor the baby? Do they bring EFMs with them?" She was serious. Another OB, while recognizing how many of their interventions really are unnecessary also spoke out against homebirth.

I thought it was very engaging and entertaining. There is a part where Michel Odent discusses humanizing birth and it moved many to tears. I hope it gets picked up for commercial release.

Is this, by chance, a re-conception (ha, pun! ) of the movie "Pregnant in America"? Or is the Pregnant in America movie still being made?

Pregnant in America examines the betrayal of humanity's greatest gift--birth--by the greed of U.S. corporations. Hospitals, insurance companies and other members of the healthcare industry have all pushed aside the best care of our infants and mothers to play the power game of raking in huge profits.

His wife pregnant, first-time filmmaker Steve Buonaugurio sets out to create a film that will expose the underside of the U.S. childbirth industry and help end its neglectful exploitation of pregnancy and birth.

Pregnant in America is the controversial story of life's greatest miracle in the hands of a nation's most powerful interests.

I'd love to see it....we have a few independent theatre's nearby so hopefully it makes it's way here....
