Midwives: a q about apprenticeship

I think I've decided that I want to be a midwife. Probably a CPM. I don't want to go the nursing route. So, how old would you prefer my youngest child be before starting? I know I can start some coursework now with some distance learning schools and do an apprenticeship later, but most of them say it has to be completed in 7 years, so I want to see what you think.

Um, I'm still a student, too...but I think that many midwives who take apprentices want you to make that decision on your own. For instance, I know that defenestrator apprenticed with an infant/toddler (am I right, stacia?), RNChrista has a young toddler, who I believe was an infant when Christa started...on the other hand, I am choosing to wait a while, till my kids are a little older before I apprentice. I'm assisting right now, and doing doula work...but that allows me more time with my kids, because I'm not responsible to be at alllllllll those pre-and post natals, as I would were I apprenticing! I think you need to decide for yourself what is okay for you and what isn't in regards to being "away" from your kids. Because the liklihood is, if you become part of a busy practice, it could be quite a bit...or find a midwife who's willing to let you bring your kids with you (okay, from experience, I can tell you that it is sooooo difficult to do birthwork--even "just" pre and post natals when your kids are with you...the midwife for whom I assist welcomes my kids and even gives me accolades for how well behaved they are and I STILL am on pins and needles and up and down the entire meeting to make sure they're quiet--it's sososososo hard to get my work done!). My take on it. And I know it's not the one you were looking for. Nonetheless, there it is!

I think it totally depends on your situation. I'm doing all of the coursework first and by the time I'm done all the kids should be in school and then I'll apprentice.

I think it is really different depending on how many kids you have, what your support system is, how busy the practice is, etc. I know of one midwife who won't take mothers of young children AT ALL. On the other hand, I am currently apprenticing with 2 midwives and I have a 5 year old, 3 year old, and a 10 month old. I have been apprenticing for about 1.5 months now or so. It is a low volume practice, so it is easy to fit in with my family and my doula clients. The only way to know would be to contact the local midwives and ask them.
