Anyone else have a non-conformist/eccentric/artistic girl? - Page 2

Last night dd said, ,"Mama, sometimes I don't like who I am. Boy-girl, girl-boy." She talked about the possibility of wearing girls' clothes to school and wearing boys' only after school, on holidays and on weekends -- "if I'm not going out." I asked her if she thinks that's a good idea and she replied no. I emphasized with her. I wanted to help, to do something, but resisted the temptation to offer advice. My poor girl -- so confused at 7.

Beanma and JayGee -- Your girls sound fantastic! I'm sorry if anyone thought I was dissing girls in pink. When I wrote that in the OP I was thinking of girls who are pressured to wear pink and do their hair up and stuff; here (in Eastern Europe) it's the cultural norm.

Let's see...my dd just turned 5. She WILL wear skirts, but ONLY the jersey knit skirts from Wild Child. (they are awfully cool) She ALWAYS has a hat on (except in the tub, and only because I say so).
Her favorite shirts are her two Beatle shirts.
She's an artist and plans to be a science teacher when she grows up. She'll blurt out "SCIENCE" at rather odd points in the day.
Here's a fairly tame pic: http://bp1.blogger.com/_WKunM-Ce9kY/.../masksmile.jpg

This was her favorite outfit last summer...she wore it whenever she could. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6...00/letterx.jpg
She loves to wear all black, with a very bright hat.
She's got one hat she calls "my artist hat" and has to put that on during very serious artwork...
She loves the Magic School Bus books & videos.
Dinosaurs, dragons, monsters, volcanoes, space, Star Wars (she's got a thing for Han), knights...

You have played Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me with Science" for her, I hope? That song was WRITTEN for your daughter!

I have another older version of this...she's 14 with fire engine red streaks in her hair, mistmatched clothes, crocheting (which is NOT cool apparently), funky fur hats, crazy shoes....and a great boyfriend that looks at her even more longingly everytime she blurts out something goofy or does something to express herself!

Ha! I was just kinda struggling with this with my 7 year-old dd. I just discussed it with her father, "Don't you think I should at least teach her about matching clothes?" (she wanted to wear a Hawaiian flowered blouse -- dark beige/green/red/orange/yellow with her boys' Hawaiian shorts (beige/red/blue huts, palm trees, dugout canoes).

He said, "Yeah, but then let her choose!" (he's a bit authoritarian sometimes, so I'm very pleased with his answer)

So she chose the shorts and a blue/green/white flowered polo shirt. Ah well. I tried!

Well, that was quick. Dh was walking by and I mentioned it. He said "hmmm...I would think it would be on one of those odd 80s compilationd CDs that we have". Sure enough, it was on "Living in Oblivion". She LOVED it!

Dd is kind of like this. On the one hand, she loves pink and frilly and princess-y stuff, but on the other hand, she is very much her own eccentric little person. She loves dancing and knows more about music than I do. She likes lizards. She does math for fun (she's homeschooled). She wants to be a lobbyist for babies and the earth. Social conformity is beyond her.

Another one with a girl with her own style! Her room is a mix of her interests. Hello Kitty & Space. She has tons of stuffed animals, legos & matchbox cars. Yesterday she was wearing orange tights with flowers & stripes, a striped skirt in the opposite direction & a turquoise shirt with dolphins. I let her wear whatever she wants as long as its weather appropriate. Today she wanted to wear something with tights, & its really humid! She does like dresses & girly things, but doesn't let them stop her from what she wants to do. In fact, the other day she had on a pink dance leotard with tutu & her astronaut helmut! I loved it! We have had to talk to her about not letting her underwear be seen when she sits. Not that its a big deal now, but as her teacher pointed out, it will be at some point. Its hard to bring type of thing out without mentioning being ladylike or making it too big of a deal though!

I think she's a good balance & just like what she likes. I have kept her away from most of the Disney princess crap & Barbie though. Although she does really lust after Barbie... I just hope she keeps being herself. She's just about finished with Kindergarten & its gone well. I just keep hoping it stays that way!
