Cloth Diapers - Page 3

I am planning to use cloth as well! IT is a little overwhelming with all the choices...and I'm still trying to figure out what makes the most sense for our situation: Pocket diapers or covers. I had found a few that work with a liner and a cover so that you aren't washing the snap on /velcrow tab cover all the time, unless it's soiled. The liner you just toss in the bucket, and change. That makes the most sense to me, since a pocket diaper sounds like the WHOLE THING is dirty ever time.
I'm just trying to cut down on laundry! I can barely manage our clothes as it is.
Any ideas? Brands that sound good?
I have a small list accumulating now!

Ds was in sposies from birth to around 14 mos then we switched to cloth. We use MEOS and the AF covers for him. It's been over a year since we switched and I really wish that we had done so sooner.

With the new babe we'll be just using unbleached cpf's with a good wrap cover until babe is big enough to fit better into the MEOS.

I use cloth with my kids, too!
I use mostly Cloth Thoughts, but throw in a few flats and prefolds to go with it.

This time around I'm thinking I want to use mostly fitteds with fun wool covers -- but I am also thinking some windpro AIOs will be great!

I already have all the size medium diapers I need -- but the size newborn and smalls will be all new!
YAY! New Fluff!

FTM, here .. but this is the plan. I'm not keen on spending 3 times the amount on premade items and I love the thought that my babe will wear dipes I made.

Covers and prefolds thru the newborn stage. I just tested out the fit on the mamabird and weeweka pattern on a friend who has a 5 week old and I see pros and cons for both. Im thinking the mamabird is going to win out for the newborn stage tho, because the wider crotch and higher rise should help contain the bf poop.

Then Ill move to pockets, and Im pretty sure Ill go with a weeweka pattern because they are so much trimmer and I like the low rise.. but I might just make the crotch trimmer on the mamabird. Im gonna test them out on my friend's baby in a couple months.

I'm so excited I had to bump this thread. I picked up 10 used Kissaluv 0's off the diapperswap board last night bringing my total now up to 11. I'll probably get one more of those and then be buying my prefolds and covers new. My dh thinks I'm being silly getting so excited over it. I showed one to my neighbor this morning and she'd never seen anything other than prefolds and is now interested in using some fitteds on her 10 month old. I sent her a few links. The Kissaluvs are just so adorable and cuddly looking.

I noticed in the sun today that the one I have at home has some light staining, what's the best way to get it out? It's not a big deal to me but if I can get it clean before my babe messes it up again I'd like to.

i had 2dz kissaluvs with ethan, and i sold them when he was a couple weeks old. i think i'm one of the few to dislike them, lol. they took forever to dry, adn that bothered me more than anything. especially when we were using 18-20 diapers a day those first couple weeks, lol. i only used them without covers, adn sold them off once he was beeing through them. he was not a small baby, but with a cover the KL were just so bulky on him. maybe it was the build?

anyway, for the stains, just wet them & lay them in the sun. that always worked for me.

for this baby, i'm buying a dozen sugar plum baby fitteds, and using our old preemie & infant prefolds. i will need to buy more covers (proraps, bummis, adn thirsties?) ... but them i'm good until larges if necessary, lol. hopefully ethan trains by them because i'm dependant on his medium stash, and he was in meds. at 5 weeks, lol.

This always worked for us with prefolds, too, but could be tricky with the bumpy surface of the sherpa (?) that the Kissaluvs are made out of. You can end up with stains lingering in the nooks and crannies. It just took a few tries, usually, with repositioning, hanging them in different orientations, stretching them out a little, etc. I never really bothered unless I was getting ready to sell them.

what worked well for me on the KL, and the gussets of other diapers was using a drying rack and clothespins to stretch it out on there . worked like a charm. ...as long as there was sun, lol.

The sun is going to be a problem here. My yard is very shady. I guess I'll have to lay them out in the front yard which has the only sunny spot for all to see. heh

Right now my kids are in disposables we have been cding off and on for 2 years.. Sometimes I love CDing and sometimes its overwhelming.. soooo I go back and forth to keep sanity lol.. I will have 3 in diapers in Jan. I really want to do cloth all the time but we have 1 washer, 1 dryer, and will have 9 people in the house which includes 5 adults!! So its difficult. I am going to attempt it at least.. The other thing that bothers me is bulk lol.. so I dunno.. Ill probably end up going back and forth at least until I only have 1 in diapers lol and then do all cloth.. I bought some more sposies today and ughhh it just bugs me to no end to buy diapers that are going in the trash can lol

Wow Tiffany, that sounds totally overwhelming. I have trouble keeping up with laundry for four! I'm getting my 8 year old trained to do loads so by Jan I should have her good and ready.
haha my 4 yr old helps a lot with the laundry (well, as much as a 4 yr old can.. but sometimes makes it MORE work lmao) I cant wait until hes old enough to do his own. Lately though I havent done much laundry at all. maybe 2 loads in the past 3 weeks lmao.. dh has been doing it ALL! I love him

That's great, Chavaleh! May I ask, what is the going rate for used KL0s these days? I have a dozen but want to pick up another 1-2 dozen. Also, can you explain why you want to have a mix of pf's and KL0s? I was assuming I'd want all the same thing, but maybe you know something I don't know?! I suppose the pf's will last longer (not grow out of them so fast)...any other reason? Thanks! I've never successfully CD'd a newborn...it seemed too exhausting with my DS because he'd pee every time I put a new one on, immediately! We switched to sposies and then I started on KLs when he was 8 mos. I loved them!

Most of the ones I've gotten used have been $8 with a few being $5 if they were in not as good shape.

I'm buying prefolds too because they are cheaper! Also I wanted to have some options in case I didn't like one or the other. I'll probably pick up an assortment of other things too... just singles. Just to try.

Ive done some research on EC and I think Ill try that so I can use cloth and not have to wash too frequently lmao..

I'm thinking the same thing. After starting my ds on the toilet at 18 months (when he started asking, and refusing diapers) I see how easy it can be. I'm uncertain about the newborn poo-all-of-the-time phase, but I'm actually curious to see how it might go! I'll still used cloth quite a bit, I'm sure, but hopefully more as back-up.

All of these plans may go up in smoke, though, when the reality of two children sets in, though!

One aside, I've just never found it to be much trouble to get a load of diapers in. We have our own W/D, so that's a big part of it, but try not to worry too much---for us it takes about 30 seconds to start the soak/rinse, then another trip for another 30 seconds to add soap and start the wash load, then another 30 seconds to switch to the dryer. I don't fold them, just jam them in a drawer or leave them in a laundry basket (when he was smaller and things in a laundry basket wouldn't get redistributed all over the house). Of course, it might take me all day to remember to get those steps done, but just have enough diapers to last more than two days and wash every two days (to start with). It just becomes part of your routine, and it's really nice to get the soft warm diapers out of the dryer instead of opening a cold crinkly package from the store!

Oooo... more fluffy joy! Must bump CD thread!

I just ordered two dozen newborn and two dozen infant prefolds from Green Mountain Diaper. Also picked up some more KL0's and 5 newborn prowraps today. So I'll have the prefolds, about 13 KL0's and 6 or 7 wraps.

I'm thinking I might need to get some more wraps and I want some wool covers but I'm waiting till I find out the gender before I go nuts with that. Is there any difference between what people list as a 'soaker' and the 'longies and shorties' a lot of mamas make? I'm thinking about getting one of the Aristocrats wool covers. How many of those do you need? Sounds like a good nighttime thing. We're cosleeping so I don't want the babe peeing everywhere (an aspect of cd'ing I'm nervous about).

How do you know what 'rise' to order for a not yet born newborn? Should I just wait on the wool till the sprout makes his or her arrival?

My DH is looking at me like I'm nuts because I'm all perky and bouncy over the prefold order. Silly man.

chavaleh, i have no answers for those questions, but i need to bump the thread for a different reason.

some of you refer to a "wet bag". could someone tell me more about what that means?

when i was doing cd with dd (it seems like forever ago, but it was 2 1/2- 3 years), we used a diaper service. they provided bags and we put the dirty diapers in them, putting them on our front steps once a week. this time we're planning to skip the service and launder ourselves - so what's the difference between a wet and dry bag?

i'd also really like to know what sort of system everyone uses with soiled cds when they're out and about. i think we always packed a few random small plastic bags in our diaper bag, so we could put soiled stuff in there until we returned home.

we always used disposable wipes with dd, because my first attempts with cloth wipes gave her a rash and weren't as good at doing an efficient clean up job. i'm going to try cloth wipes again this time, with some different ideas in mind that will probably work better. does anyone have suggestions about how they use cloth wipes when out and about?

i'm getting pretty obessed with this stuff lately - i'm glad to read i'm not alone. since we won't be using the service it actually opens us up to more options than we had with dd, and i can't wait to start diapering this baby!

A wet bag is a waterproof bag to store your dirty diaps in. You can get large ones to hold a couple of days' worth until laundry day, as I do, or you can get small ones for the diaper bag when you're out and about. They're really great. Before I got my big wet bag, I just kept my dirty diaps in a pillowcase set in a laundry basket. It worked just fine. For out and about, you can use plastic shopping bags or whatever. The advantage of a wetbag is that you can toss it in with your diaper laundry and reuse it.

thanks! that's cool about being able to wash and re-use it.
