What kind of history are you looking for? I like the bio's of midwives - they give good history of that woman's life as a midwife and midwifery in their time and location: Sisters on a Journey, Baby Catcher, A Midwife's Tale, Listen to me Good, etc...

I like Listen to Me Good, Diary of a Midwife, Heart and Hands (the first chapter), and I found an unexpected resource in Foxfire 2, where there is an article entitled "Midwives and Granny Women."

I just read the book Birth: The surprising history of how we are born and it was awesome! It is so thorough and has some really interesting detailed stories that I can't believe the author found. She is an investigative reporter and I was just completely impressed.

Midwives in History and Society by Jean Towler and Joan Bramall... I found this at the university library in town and it was very very interesting. It begins as far back as history exists and ends in modern times. It was written in 1986.
