I'm making some right now with 35"X35" habotai silk scarves from Dharmatrading. I dyed them with Kool-Aid and they cost about $3.50 each. The silky solids at Joann start at $4/yd (prints are twice that), and the polyester isn't as nice as silk imo. There's a thread in the toys board about making play silks, and someone posted a pictures and directions, I think, to make capes w/ playsilks. http://www.mothering.com/discussions...=524156&page=4

I used "crushed velvet" and panne. I had a 40% off coupon at Hancocks. I made about 12 half circle capes for my 4 year olds party. Each cape was about half the width of the fabric in radius. Then I put a little braided drapery cord sewn across for a chest piece. The kids could just stretch the capes over their heads. The crushed velvet is stretchy. Ours were all crimson and were a total hit. Parents said they loved them. They don't even need hemming because the fabric won't fray.
