Vermont HSers

We are looking at Vermont as a possible place to live. In looking at the homeschool laws, I see that you have to submit a yearly notice of what you plan to teach and then at the end of the year have an independent assessment of your child's ability. I am wondering how much of a PITA this is in practice, because it sure looks annoying on paper! What if your child doesn't meet the assessor's expectations? How does this work with unschooling? What are your experiences with this law? TIA!

I don't have personal experience yet, but my sister homeschooled one of her boys for part of last year, and she found the requirements easy to work with. There is another option besides the independent assessment - you can submit a portfolio documenting what was learned. That's what she did. She was told it could include things like brochures from museums or historical sites, so apparently you don't have to "prove" that your kid learned X, Y, and Z - just provide some evidence that they did.
