...we are *this close* to pulling DS out of public school/starting home/unschooling:

yesterday i picked DS up from school and he seemed even more sluggish and grumpy than usual after a long day of classes. i figured it was maybe b/c usually, by the time i see him it's been an hour or 2 since he left school (he normally takes the school bus home) and he's a little 'revived'. well, when i asked him how his day was/what was wrong, i find out that they did not go to class b/c the 10th graders are taking the HSA's this week.

that didn't make much sense to me, so i asked more questions...like, "what did you do all day?" he says, "we stayed in the gym. we had to stay in there all day and were only allowed to get up to go to the bathroom. my butt hurts from sitting on the bleachers for so long. i don't want to go back tomorrow." so now, i'm like: : ...and still trying to make some sense of this. i say, "that's it? you didn't do any work? activities? ANYTHING?!" he replies, "oh, well, we watched superman 3, and had lunch. and the movie was really clear! i don't know how they got a bootleg copy so early and so clear. that JUST came out like a week ago. we actually went to 8th period, but it was too late to do anything by the time we got there."

at this point i'm trying to control myself b/c i am like: . they have the nerve...no audacity to show a movie that is a bootleg copy to a bunch of CHILDREN. no one took into consideration the horrible example that sets?! and they don't have these kids doing ANYTHING just b/c they are not the 10th graders taking the HSA's? the HSA's last a WEEK! what, so the 9th, 11th and 12th graders just skate/waste away during this time period? this CANNOT be normal/o-k. DS interrupts my ranting thoughts with "do i have to go to school this week? i'm not going to learn anything sitting in the gym all day, and it HURTS. my body's sore, and there's nothing in my brain." i tell him i'll call the school and find out if this is in fact the schedule for the week.

so, off he went to school today, and i called when i got to work. they tell me that yes, this is basically the schedule w/ the exception of wednesday [which will be a regular day], and the other days will have 1 or 2 periods of class at the end of the day, but different ones so not 8th like DS had yesterday. the woman on the phone is telling me this like it's the most normal thing in the world. i am: : and and and ! but talking to these people is like: so i just tell her thank you and get off the phone. i will send DS to school tomorrow, but let him stay home thurs and fri.

*sigh* i'm just so aggravated/frustrated/disappointed/etc in this school, and the school system overall. i really think this will be his last year in traditional school. it's going to kick my a** trying to guide him through an education while working FT, but he's more and more open to home/unschooling, and i don't see how leaving him in PS is going to help him at all...it seems more like it will just harm him/keep him from learning.

thanks for listening if you got this far!

Wow. That's absurd. A bootleg copy? :

So, I think you should do what is on your heart.

Is there any way your work hours can be flexible, you can go home at lunch, get up earlier and leave earlier? Any chance your boss will let you do work at home part of the time? Can you tele-commute?

Is there a homeschooling co-op near you?

What are his interests? Does he like philosophy and math? Science? Engineering? History? Where do his interests lie and what does he want to study? I'd talk with him about what he wants to learn and then talk about his required coursework and how he feels about accomplishing that even though he may want to.

Just a lot to think about and talk with him about but I really am so excited for you. I think you both can do this.

Wow. That's crazy.

I wonder if any other parents think this is unacceptable? It might help to get some people together to make a fuss, instead of just one parent calling the office.

What poor planning on the schools part. Even if they stocked the gym with games and make it one big game day that would of been something kind of fun and educational.

They could of pulled out proper tables and chairs for the kids. They could have had an area with art supplies, another with great books, another with healthy snacks.

And definitely not bootleg movies. They could have had a communal softball and or soccer game offered for anyone who wanted to play. But to just stick them all in there is really poor and not respectful of children at all.

Never heard of such a thing. I guess I have been luckier with our public schools.

I'm wondering, if they can fit all of the 9, 11, and 12th graders into the gym.....why can't they fit a bunch of desks in there and do the testing in the gym while everybody else has class as usual???
I don't want to sound like I'm flaming you but why didn't you go get your son right away today? Why let him sit there all day? At least pick him up at lunch.

Don't let the school make it sound like this is OK, it's not. I've never heard of this-it's such a waste of time and with all the complaints about not enough time to teach they waste 4 days? I'd really do something about this even if you do pull your child out. I'd let the media know and inform the school board-I bet with some exposure this won't happen again next year!

: That, or why not test the 10th graders in their classrooms? Or at least send home notices ahead of time to let the parents know what's going on before it happens?

I have. I've seen it.

That's a poor test environment for the 10th graders - and remember they must do as well as possible on the almighty test.

Classes can't rotate as usual w/out the 10th graders because faculty and rooms won't be available. They probably don't want to ring the change of class bells and disturb the test-takers. It's pretty complicated to reschedule 3/4 of the school for a few days. Drugging them with tv is much easier and I guarantee they will get very few complaints.

Ah, yes - you ARE right, sadly.

I have seen this kind of stuff repeatedly when ds was in ps. His school was very old and the gym was actually the old theater, so the kids didn't even have bleachers or any equipment to sit on or play with, and weren't allowed on the stage, so they basically just sat on the floor and read for hours on end, or coloured.

When ds was in grade 2, all the students had to be evaluated individually by the teacher. The idea was this would take at the most a month, but in reality it 7 months, with the teacher having to get a sub once a week to pull on kid out at a time and do the required evaluation. Add to that the constant colds and flu the teacher was getting, and the class had a sub for about half the year. By the time this evaluation was done, the kids who'd been done first were almost a year older, so they had to start all over :

Panamama, I'm a single mom who works between 25 and 50 hours a week, depending on the events going on at the arena where I work. My hs is almost 14, it's not the best arrangement, I wish I were at home more, but it is very workable, especially is you have any flexibility at your job, or can take your son along with you sometimes.

Yeah, that.

Well, except for the free day care part. I don't think parents have their kids in school so they can have free day care. Parents are putting kids in school to get an education and that institution has rules about attendance. Some even have punishments and rewards that pertain to the student. Sure the school wants money but the parents are just trying to follow the guidelines of their school.

The bootleg is just careless and would irk me to no end. But then again, I homeschool so its a moot point.

Seriously. It boggles my mind that they did not even tell the parents that this was going on. And a bootleg copy -- ack! I would definitely be keeping my kid home Thurs. and Fri. too. Your poor son -- what a waste of his time!

Definitely make it clear to the school why you're keeping him home.

You may wish to consider an open letter to the school board, cc the letters to the editor for your local paper. Or, call the reporter who covers local news and schools. They are always looking for stories and this is one that need to be told, to state the obvious.

I could be wrong, it's happened before - once last year I think - but I don't think many in the community would be outraged or even upset about this. I've come to understand that I (and probably y'all too) sometimes live in a universe parallel, but completely separate from the mainstream. I swear sometimes it feels like everyone but me believes the earth is the center of the universe, that 1 +1=3, and that children should be seen and not heard.

That is crazy. I've never seen or heard of anything like that. But I guess it doesn't surprise me. I'd let him stay home too and let the school know exactly why.

thank you all for your responses. i had to step back and regroup b/c even though i thought getting (typing) it out would help me feel a little better, i just started to get angry all over again the more i thought about it. i took a break and read some more of the teenage liberation handbook to calm my nerves.

DS went to school today, and that's it for the week. a couple more weeks, and that's most likely it forever (or until college!).

my work is not that flexible...i could probably leave around 4pm a lot of days, maybe even 3pm some, but not all the time. i recognize i will most likely have to find another/different job(s), and that's fine with me. i don't really like the one i have anyway. the only drawback is that it pays pretty well/is pretty cushy and i will have to give that up to work harder for almost certainly less pay. i don't want to work harder and be tired (and on top of that stressed about $) when i'm trying to help guide DS w/ his home/unschooling. i know it will be worth it though.

DS is interested in computers/technology/grapic design/animation...and also loves nature/animals/science. he, unfortunately, HATES math, and isn't very fond of writing either. he does like to read though. our area is not really a big HSing area, but i know there is a very crunchy/HSing/supportive area relatively close by, so i'm going to check out the groups in that county. i've also found a ton of really great resources here on MDC!

when i first started talking about HSing w/ DS, he looked at me like i'd grown another head. now...he's like, "when can we start?!" i've been very tempted to just let him quit now, but apparently it's required that we give the state (MD) 30 days notice and file a letter of intent (or something similarly named). there's not even 30 days of school left, so, we'll just do it over the summer and not have him go back.

thanks so much for the encouragement. i am so nervous about this big change, but really feel like it will be for the best.
