Ds (5) has soft stools and has always had soft stools… why? (x-post)

When ds was a baby I used to read posts about other babies with diarrhea and I always wondered how they knew it was diarrhea because ds’ stool were always very soft. I just thought that it was from breastfeeding. They did harden up a little when we stopped b/f, and once in a blue moon he has a hard one, but they are almost always soft. I never paid much attention to it because it’s always been like that it hasn’t affected his health or anything. He does occasionally complain of stomach pains, but I haven’t noticed any correlation because, like I said, his stools are almost always soft.

I’ve grown concerned about it, though, since he’s been in school because it’s too messy for him to wipe himself and he holds it in until he comes home. He told me the other week that he has never gone poop at school because he’s scared it will be too messy. So, I think I need to finally figure this out. What could it be? He eats a healthy diet with lots of veggies and fruit, whole grains, beans, dairy (maybe this is the cause?), meat, seafood, etc.

I’m guessing I should try a food elimination, but I wanted to run it by some of you to see if you had any thoughts before.

Thanks a ton in advance!

Some people are just like that.

Could he take a small baggy of flushable wipes with him to school just in case?

It could be an allergy but if he has always been that way...I would not rush to that conclusion. It could also be that he eats a pretty good diet that just keeps things moving along.

Does he drink a lot of juice? Apple juice (which is the main juice in many blends) in particular. That can keep things pretty soft.

One other thought. Maybe adding some probiotics to his diet would help him beef up his digestive flora to help him digest things better (and harden up his bowl movements).
