Lactivism Challenge #1

In another thread we brainstormed about having a lactivism challenge. I was thinking that our first challenge could be to help in the fight to protect breastfeeding in PA. The bill that we set our hopes on has been gutted. Read about it here: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=678836

What does everyone think about a two week challenge centered around writing letters to Representative Williams expressing our anger that the bill has been changed and that we no longer support it. Non PA residents can either not note their location or write in support of PA moms.

If anyone would like, I would be happy to come up with a form letter for those who do not wish to write one themselves but want to send something.

contact info for rep Williams:

chwilliams@pasenate.com

UPDATE:

A short and sweet form letter to connie williams, who contends she has only gotten two letter from people complaining about the new wording. So let's fill her box!!:

Dear Senator Williams (OR we can use this to write to a member of the House, where the Bill is headed next)

I am writing to express my ____ (frustration? anger? dissatisfaction? need help with this word) concerning the changes that were made to Bill 34. It is not acceptable to me that language giving mother's the right to breastfeed was removed. In addition, removing the section which prohibits local governments from interferring with breastfeeding in public puts all nursing mothers at risk. I respectfully withdraw my support from this bill.

If you write a form lettter see if ProMoM will make it a 3 minute activist letter.

Is ProMoM still doing that?
The last time I looked (a month ago maybe) I was surprised that there was not much recent activity.

Ok, I'm not the best writer, but here is a beginning form letter that we can edit together to make it better:

Dear Senator Williams (OR we can use this to write to a member of the House, where the Bill is headed next)

I am writing to express my ____ (frustration? anger? dissatisfaction? need help with this word) concerning the changes that were made to Bill 34. OK- that is pretty skeletal. Should we add something concerning the fact that they removed the preamble, which talks about the benefits of breastfeeding (their reasoning was that it is "offensive to moms who have not breastfed")

What do you all think? Also, do you think we should direct the letters to rep Williams or to the leader of the House, where the bill is headed next? This is my first time dealing with this type of letter writing, so I am not sure where it should be directed at.

I posted for mamajake to come on over here and give us some advice on the form letter as well as who we should address it to. Once I have the form letter completed, I will put in into the OP so it's easy to find.

It is very important that letters get sent to House Reps. We need to block this bill in the House. Also, there is another bill that was proposed in the House that we have to concentrate on. We need to keep the wording right in this bill and then maybe we will have a chance. I'll get the info on this and post again.

Also, here is the article from the Reading Eagle that I interviewed with:

Ok, I will write another form letter that will address concerns to the House. We will express our desire that they keep the wording as it was before the amendment.

The Promom website hasn't been active in several months as far as I know. The 3 minute activist hasn't been updated since Sept. 2006.

Thanks for starting this, great idea!

I'm not in the area but really want to help. I'm subbing and up to the Challenge- off to read the details

It should read, "I respectfully withdraw my support." No L.

Great letter, and I really love the idea of a biweekly lactivism challenge.

Thanks for the edit! I changed the letter and have posted it in the OP. It's short and sweet. I wrote Williams another letter with my own wording. She claims she has only received two letters from people upset about the new wording. Let's fill her box and show her how we feel!!!!!!!

just sent mine off!

carriebft- thanks for writing the draft letter

I wrote a letter this morning. I'm not from PA, but I am from a state with a wonderfully worded breastfeeding law. In my letter I pointed out the difference between "permit a freedom" and "protect a right". IMO, there is a very big difference!

awesome job mommas who have written so far!

Another idea for out of state moms- PA has a lot of "Visit PA" ads on the radio these days. Perhaps adding a line about hesitation to visit a state where you might not be able to feed your child without harassment might be a good idea in out of state letters!

I was just thinking the same thing... eventhough I already sent a letter, I could always send another. RIGHT? :
