I have read not to have the dentist put in certain type of filling..our insurance will only pay for silver fillings...is this safe or should we pay out of pocket for the resin filling...how good is plastic fillings in a 2 y/o? I hate that we are even having to deal with this....dentist wants to fill 3 of ds teeth..he says we should have this done in the next couple of months...and i really dont want to do this when ds is still so young...and advice?

silver fillings = amalgam fillings = 50% mercury

not a good idea for a kid. Demand composite fillings aka "tooth colored fillings" or glass ionomer cement (a temp filling material)

If your dentist insists on placing amalgam, find another dentist. Some dentists may be willing to place composite fillings, and bill the insurance for amalgam. But that really shouldn't be necessary.
