Heather! As far as my beans, I use a square tomato cage, and weave fishing line up it (it's 8 feet tall, withthe cages stacked one on top of the other). I just put the line straight up from where the beans are planted and when they come up, they grab on and GO!
The peas can sometimes be a little harder, but generally, they DO just grab on when they get tall enough. I grow amish snaps most of the time (and sometimes green arrow shelling peas), they grow TALL...and I've had issues making them climb my bamboo poles, but they grow up my pretty cathedral window trellis perfectly (it's much narrower than even the narrow bamboo poles and they love it!). Go figure...they have attitudes about what they prefer...I say that sometimes giving in to them makes your life a lot easier!
