1yr old with a huge cavity!

My 14 month old DS has a big chunk missing from one of his top middle incisors! I only just discovered it because he's so close-mouthed all the time, I don't know if he got it chipped out somehow or it's been a cavity developing or what. I brush his teeth once a day, usually without toothpaste unless we have fluoirde free at the time (depends who buys the toothpaste me or dh). Does he have to go through getting a filling? He's so young! It's a baby tooth but it's supposed to last several years!

us too

Hi JamieCatheryn,

my 25-mo-old also has a huge cavity- it also looks like a chunk is missing from one of her molars. Her ped. thought she'd fallen while holding something hard in her mouth but its decay. I know 3 other young children who have been through this. I think its REALLY important to address it. Left untreated it can imact the permanent teeth that are behind the baby teeth, it can spread to other teeth, it can get infected and really threaten their health. and besides all that, it hurts! Do you have or know of a good pediatric dentist who you can trust? My DD is having surgery Monday to address her(3) cavities (why I'm visiting this area of MDC). Please email me if you want to talk by phone or anything. bellemm@verizon.net

sending good thoughts,
Julie.

Are you positive that the chunk hasn't been there since the tooth came in? I ask because dd has a defect in one of her top front teeth. It's like a chunk is missing from it. I had it checked out soon after the tooth came in, and found out it is a defect. They said it would easily decay, so I make sure to brush any food out of it a couple of times/day. She's almost 5 and a half now, and no decay so far. So, get it checked out. Maybe it isn't decay at all.

We just got back from the dentist and my 17-month-old has a chunk missing from his right lateral incisor. The dentist looked at it and said it was decay, and then told me that we'll need to come back in so the can do some sort of procedure that would require DS to be VERY physically restrained. I'm going to call around for some second opinions. If I can do something without putting DS through that, then I will jump at the opportunity.

I've started giving him butter oil and high vit cod liver oil maybe that'll help him.
