I sympathise with him and his shocked disbelief, I'm still having trouble coming to terms with it after all this time. I found a book on male glamour photography, and all the men were obviously American. I found it completely incongruous that they thought they were striking these supposedly erotic poses, and all I could see were the scars, it was revolting and so sad. The book is now in the cardboard recycler for pulping; they really shouldn't export books like that outside the US (although someone must have bought it for it to have ended up at the sale).

It's hard to believe that a "civilised" nation that we're brought up to believe the US is, could inflict this sort of pain and suffering on its children - just because they can.

oh GOD NO!!!

i was just warning DH that if he ever takes DS to see a doctor without me (shouldn't happen, but i was in the mood of running the worst case scenarious in my head )he has to be extra careful and state clearly to them not to touch his penis! and as usual dh was only half focusing, saying aha, aha. so i made him focus, and told him that the doctors here are uneducated about intact penises, so he needs to be very vigilant and direct. so dh finally perked up, and said, are you saying all the doctors here are jewish and see only jewish patients? : so i had to repeat it again, and he was like NO, this can't be true. so basically he still doesn't believe me that the majority are cut.

yes, it is extremely important to make sure that no doctor/nurse/child care worker ever retracts/pulls back (even a little bit) your little one's foreskin.

I think your husband will take your words very seriously if you ask him to read this http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=129378

Statistics seem to vary and can be confusing. Some states are reporting very high rates (Wis, Mich, South Carolina, Hawaii, Nebraska), with over 80% circumcised before hospital discharge. In SC, 92% of male infants whose parents had private insurance were circumcised in 2004.:

OTOH, here in the Bay Area things are different, but variable. In downtown San Francisco several doula/midwife friends have said that the majority are left intact, in a downward trend that started about 10 years ago in a big way. And these are insured, middle class hospital births. With the right attitude, things can change. BTW, this info comes from several independent comments, so I am inclined to feel it is accurate. We'll see.

Just so you know, Canada wasn't so great not that long ago. My brother (now 32) was one of the few boys we knew who was intact. Most male doctors will be circumsised themselves and although the information is getting better, you still find some who are retact happy.

I was surprised by the results - I would have thought the south would have been higher than other regions. I guess the large number of hispanic population (which have a much lower rate than whites.). Also, what is Arizona doing right?! It would be so wonderful if insurance companies would stop paying for it. That really seems to reduce the rate.

That is the key getting insurance to stop paying for cosmetic proceedures. The number would drop even lower for sure. Tho some would still save up to do it but overall it would get people thinking.
