getting a cavity filled, older fillings replaced while nursing/ttc

Hi, I was pointed over here from the TTC forum. I didn't even know there was a dental forum. Oops!

I am nursing and TTC. I have a small cavity that my dentist wants to fill during the 2WW. At the same time he wanted to replace 2 old metal fillings that are looking kind of worn with composite. From what I have been reading here I should not have the metal fillings messed with while I am nursing, TTC, or pregnant.

So my questions...is it safe for him to fill the small cavity I have now as long as he does it with composite (since I am breastfeeding and will be post ovulation)? He wanted to just go ahead and fix the old metal fillings at the same time, but said they were fine for now and could wait. So I'm guessing I should wait to have the metal ones replaced until I am not nursing, pregnant, or TTC...correct?

The cavity is a little sensitive so I would like to have that done if possible, I'm sure he would not have a problem doing that one composite even though it's in the back of my mouth. I should be able to request that he not do metal, right?

Thank you, sorry for all the questions!

Okay so I just had a chance to read through a few links I found in another post...wow, definitely not having the metal ones messed with any time soon! He said they looked fine, so I'm sure I'm okay on those until after we are done having babies and nursing (should be in the next 5 years or so). Then I'll find a doctor who follows the correct procedure for removing them and have them fixed.

But would still like to know if having the small cavity filled while nursing/TTC is safe. I will request composite for sure.

one more question...even though I am not going to have any work done on the old metal fillings, would it be better for me to go ahead and go to one of the IAOMT recommended dentists in my area to get the cavity filled with composite, or is it okay to go to the regular dentist for that? Just wondering which would be best

Is it close to a metal filling? Sometimes they drill out some of the old for the composite if they're very close

It's on a completely different tooth. My 2 metal fillings are in one tooth, and this new filling would be on a different tooth.

I haven't made an appt to get the filling done yet, still trying to decide if I want to go to the regular dentist for that or not.

Thank you!

Hi,
Looks like we have a bit in common. I am nursing my 2 yr. old and preparing for ttc with the Dr.'s help. I went through my last pregnancy with my small fillling not dealt with and it drove me batty. Any how I waited until now to have it filled then went in last week for the appointment and asked not to have the freezing. It went great. Literally took 5 minutes. I also have metal fillings that I will leave until hopefully I am done my childbearing years. I had it done with composite.

Thanks for your input Marlee. Could I ask what you mean by freezing? Are you talking about the numbing shot?

I'm glad your dental work went well!

Sorry I missed your reply. Yes I meant the numbing shot. Hey this is a board that advocates no pain meds for childbirth Just kidding but hey if it can be done without then I am all for it. It never hurts to ask.
