another thread from me - can you see i'm prepping?

anyone have any great song suggestions to listen to during labor? What's in your playlist?

DH (and my doula) thought I was nuts for my birth mix, because it was more energetic than relaxing. As it happened, I didn't actually listen to it DURING my labor, so it didn't matter!

I put on "power woman" songs that I love, like "I Will Survive".

My favorite "birth" song (that I'm sure the band never thought it would be) is "These Hips" (by a lesbian band: Girls in the Nose -- based upon a Lucille Clifton poem that includes: "These hips / are big hips / they need space to move around in / They don't fit into little [tiny?] places / These hips are MIGHTY hips!")

Also from Peter Paul & Mommy "...and if you take my hand my son, all will be well when the day is done..." (Don't know the title.) To this day, I get teared up when I hear that song because it TOTALLY reminds me of waiting for my son's birth.

Mine is pretty random...as it was last time. And like Willo I didn't actually listen to it during the birth (we left it in the car and forgot where it was an well...I didn't really want it anyway!).

Ummm...right now on the soothing list I've got some chants from a pagan cd called "Second Chants", a few tracks from the Henry V soundtrack, some Loreena McKennit. I also have some tracks from the Buena Vista Social Club album, some very calm Irish instrumental music, and a few random lullabies from here and there.

My "middle of the road" list has some Juno Reactor and other "trance" style tracks, some Rusted Root, and a ton of middle eastern/silk road style music by a group called Turku (I belly dance and loooooove this group, and the drumming is wonderful for birth). I also have a few tracks from Annbjorg Lien's "Baba Yaga" cd (Scandinavian stuff) since the rythms and tones are really interesting and always make me feel like there's a story playing in my head...And a few pieces by Duke Ellington.

My "bouncy" play list includes some "modern" swing music (mostly the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Squirrel Nut Zippers), Buckwheat Zydeco, really upbeat Irish music (both traditional instrumental/vocal pieces and things by modern Celtic Sca groups like Flogging Molly), some Mighty Might Boss Tones, and some Madonna.

As I said...it's a little this and a little that. I'm making sure my MP3 player and headphones wind up in my bag this time so hopefully I'll have some for the birth...but last time it was still great for early labor at home and putting it all together was a good way to spend some pre-babe time as well.

Mine is like an ipod shuffle! I picked out songs that I found relaxing, songs that had emotions attached (from falling in love with DH, our wedding, etc) empowering songs (I stuck in Pearl Jam's "Alive" for good measure) and just plain sappy stuff. I have three CDs plus the hypbirth labor music. I don't know if I'll even listen to it but I feel better having put them together.

If all else fails I set aside some fun comfort music like Pink Floyd and The Beatles that just makes me feel good.

Deep Breakfast

Most if it's the sort of stuff I can just put on "repeat" for a while, and not worry about it getting annoying. And all is relaxing.

I have a lot of mellow music, with a ton of Nickel Creek throughout. I also have Ben Harper, Alison Krauss, Ani Difranco, Norah Jones, Janis Joplin, and Blues Traveler to name a few. Most of it is stuff I used to listen to when my DH and I first met...kinda meaningful, I guess. The rest is just stuff that comforts me, and I already listen to it to get to sleep or just calm myself when I'm flustered!

I like Native American music or gregorian chant because it makes me feel "earthy" and I don't have to try to listen to the words cause I got no idea what they're saying!

I want to put together a playlist as well, my doula suggested Enya, but (like a few PPs) I think I'll end up not listening to it. I like the idea of music without words or words that will not be understood.

We have an iPod & I'm getting DH a docking station as an early Father's Day gift. I guess I can come up with a few selections just in case I'm in the listening mood.
