cheaper alternative to calgon?

are there any alternatives to calgon out there for those of us with very hard water. vinegar isn't the best alternative with our hard water. i especially need it with the diapers! i have a front loading machine... thanks!

it's the other calgon
it is a water softener that helps so you don;t get detergent build up...

I've heard that washing soda is a water softener, but I don't know how it compares to calgon in terms of price or effectiveness.

how does calgon work better than vinegar? I've been in a place with very hard water for 2 years and I'm still learning the tricks. Most people have water softeners, but I'm in an apartment without one.
