Keeping almonds in the freezer

Anyone have any idea how long almonds will keep in the freezer?

I'm looking to stock up before they start pasteurizing them with propylene oxide.

From what I've seen and done, its generally around 1 year for a regular freezer and around 2 years for a deep freezer, if the almonds are whole (shelled, but not cut up).

yikes! do you know when the date is that they're going to start doing this? Would almonds bought from the farmer's market be pasteurized too?

Almond pasteurization will start in Sept 2007. They will be pasteurized with propylene glycol which is racing car fuel and will still be labelled as 'raw'

From what I understand organic almonds sold directly by farmers in California will still be steam treated. They can only be sold directly by the farmers.

Where can I find out more about this treatment for almonds? I haven't heard anything about this, and we eat a ton of almonds.

ugh! I would like more info too...does the same go for organic? and all states?

farmers selling in Cali

Does anyone have a list of farmers in California that will be selling organic steamed treated almonds? I just found out about this. Yikes! I am starting my son on almond milk, switching from soy, but now there is this to worry about.

What about almonds from other countries? Will they have to be pasturized too?

Growers can apply for exemptions if they can prove that their manufacturing process - be it dry roasting, blanching or any other traditional treatments - achieves pasteurization. They also can sell small quantities of raw, unpasteurized almonds direct to customers at farm stands or at certified California farmers markets, but can face penalties if they’re caught selling more than 100 pounds a day to any one person.
