Switching from hospital to homebirth at 36wks!

Celebrate with me!!! We have just decided on a homebirth with a MW we really like. We really really didn't like the hospital tour, and I've been leaning towards a homebirth for a while now, but it was DH who said last week, maybe we should look into our options before we get any closer to the due date! He had been reading Ina May.

We are both so happy about this--it's our first baby, and DH would love to catch her if possible. It will be so nice to be at home. Has anyone switched at this late point? What was it like? Did it work to make up for lost time with your MW?

Today I also cancelled my next ob appointment--which was going to be the GBS swab. So that is another reason to celebrate!

That is really great, I am so happy to hear you are going with your gut instincts on what is best for you and your baby. Congradulations

Good for you. I'm sure it'll be much nicer to be at home, esp if you don't get good vibes from the hospital. Considering that 1st births are on the later side, you should be able to get your kit.

I am really happy with my hospital & feel very fortunate in finding my MWs & doula. I find it amazing that I actually like the hospital. I feel like I get the best of both worlds since my MWs have the maternity ward running like a birthing center. The only thing about the hospital is that it doesn't have is a NICU, but I don't expect any problems with Ian.

Ultimately, I think wherever you have your baby, the most important thing is to feel confident that it's where you want to be & that you can have the type of birth experience that you want.

Congratulations on your decision! It's hard to switch your plans this late in the game, but soooo worthwhile. I really wish I'd done that with my first pregnancy. As time went on I got less and less comfortable with the hospital, and actually hired a doula around 34 weeks, which I hadn't been planning to do. I should have found a MW, but instead I stuck with the hospital and have regretted it ever since. Thank goodness I did hire the doula - she made possible almost every positive aspect of DD's birth!

Switching this late can be scary, but I SOOooo wish I'd done it last time!

Yeah! Good for you! Especially great that you are both so on-board with it. We didn't get all our supplies until a week or two ago, actually still waiting for something small (not critical) in the mail & I'll be 39 wks Saturday ohmygosh!

Congrats! Good for you for going with your instincts and being willing to change the plans so late in the game. I hope you have a beautiful homebirth.

Congrats! It is so important that you be comfortable during the birth, it's a good thing you looked elsewhere if the hospital felt off. It's great that you found someone you and your DH are so comfortable with also.

I had a home birth with my first and it was wonderful. Glad you feel good about your decision.
You will have most of the things in your house you need anyway and the midwife should bring the rest. I have a box i have put all the towles, snacks, clothes and other stuff into so that it is all in one place for the birth

Thanks, everyone! We're going to have our 36 week home visit this weekend, at 37 weeks, and I guess I'd better order my birthkit soon.

My twin sister switched to a homebirth midwife late as well, and was so glad she did!

Congrats to you on your decision! Happy Homebirthing!
