Emily...actually all you know from the au pair story is how hot DH THINKS I am...which is good enough for me
I'll try to take a couple pics later though. I got lots of stuff, it wasn't just one outfit, fortunately (I think that helped)
Pie...Mephisto...great investment. I have two pairs of shoes that were pricey (Dansko and Beautifeel)...and I wear them all the time. I have arthritis in my foot and I just can't wear cheap shoes anymore...maybe I never really could, and am just now feeling it. You won't be sorry! There are some things you just can't scrimp on, shoes is one of them. (Also, always pay retail for meat...DH's rule.) I like the shared $ for maternity clothes idea...except we're just this month combining our money into a joint account so it's the first time I really had to worry what he would think about what I spent...he's the one I had to teach the value of money to, now he worries about it all the time so we've kind of switched places. I may have created a monster.
CJ...how's mommy-hood? We know you're busy but I love hearing from you when you can check in!
Becky...how nice you can work from home a couple days a week. Not an option for me, unless I can figure out how to get a tape-player to my chair for rehearsals and have my assistant principal press the right button at the right time... the reason the au pair works so well for us is that we don't have normal hours...I'll have occasional daytime rehearsals, then several nights a week, then back to day... so it's a lot of juggling a lot of different babysitters if we go that route, and this seems simpler.
Minnow...good luck with the decision...I personally don't like teaching either, I find it really exhausting but I do love what I do now and am taking on extra work this summer because it will make up for the work I'm missing in the fall (which isn't much, but enough to count). It doesn't require a whole lot of extra preparation on my part though, so it's a little different than your situation. I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you. I just feel better knowing that extra income is there.
Jenn...how sweet about DH feeling the baby! I bet he loved that. Mine puts his hand on my belly several times a day, but nothing yet (I'm not even sure if I've felt movement yet) but I know he can't wait for the day.
dcgirl...welcome! We have the same due date! I don't know gender yet though.
Elizabeth...that's a nice chair! Sorry about the maternity benefits...we don't get anything either, other than "try to time it for the summer when we're not playing" and I can use my sick leave, of which there isn't much. So we did, try to time it that is, and baby is due 6 days after the end of the fall opera season, but I"m still gonna miss 2 weeks of ballet and the Kennedy Center Honors (the televised show on CBS every December) so that's about $5,000 after taxes. We're just trying to put money aside to cover it now. Playing the show this summer helps, since normally I don't work all summer, so I think we'll be in ok shape. Still, when are the laws gonna catch up to reality? So many women in this situation, having to decide between EATING and reproducing? No fair.
Whew! Is that everyone?
Ok, well DH wasn't mad, especially because I think I handled it right: I tried on all the clothes for him first so he could see how sexy I looked
Half the stuff I bought I can wear for work, since I'll be playing 8 shows a week and I only had one black maternity outfit so far, so I needed this stuff anyhow. He did however feel the need to gloat that the clothes he bought the day before were MUCH cheaper than mine. I figured gloating was well-deserved...but man, I feel good in these clothes! I just told him how nice it was to not feel dowdy for the first time in 4 months, so it was worth it to him. Sometimes the price makes the difference...still, I'd better stay away from that store from now on. But I justified it by saying, well, we're gonna do this again someday so I can wear them for the next kid, right?
That said, I still need a couple more black shirts and a swimsuit. Maybe this time it's back to Target.
Have a great day!
