Is this okay? Are they moldy? Some are translucent, and some are white. Are they still safe to use?

I'm wondering if they turned white because I've been using a metal strainer - I've only had them 10ish days, so it's not like they've had long term exposure to the metal. I also strain and dump the grains really quickly lol

I also noticed that when I make grape juice kefir, the kefir will eat up all the sugar (if I leave them long enough), and leave a bad wine type tasting drink. However, when I leave the grains in the sugar water for a similar time period, the drink remains sweet. I wonder if the grains do better with natural sugars rather than refined? I wonder how much sugar I'm actually consuming when I drink the water kefir.
