he has a little house with doors that he always plays with. it's never been outside and sits on the floor next to his dresser until he wants to play with it. the other day, as i was walking by, i noticed a web, opened one of the doors and there was a black widow. thinking about ds putting his hand in there gives me nightmares. i searched his room as well as i could and saw no other webs, but i'm still concerned that there may be another one hiding somewhere. how do i get rid of them?

Ew how scary! I've read that spraying a little diluted lemongrass EO around cracks, crevices, and corners is good for keeping all bugs including spiders, ants, flies, etc. away.

Honestly? We have black widows and scorpions all over the place where I live. I tried and tried to do things the natural way. I tried Diatanaceous Earth (however you spell that), EOs etc.... and still, I'd be sitting on my sofa and see a scorpion scurry across the floor right where my children play or I'd go out the back door and see a web with a black widow right where they would be sitting and drawing on the patio with chalk. It got to be too much for me so I hired a professional pest control company. I do the bare minimum - I only have them spray outside and we only do it during the spring/summer months when the spiders and scorpions are at their worst. But, I coud not risk my children being stung/bitten and getting very very sick. I know it's not idea but there are more natural/environmentally friendly pest control companies out there and you can control when and where they spray.

I agree with amcal, we have widows, recluses and scorpions here and we have a pest control contract where they spray around the perimeter of the house quarterly. It's the only thing that's worked for us.

How scary!!!!! I used to live in Arizona and my neighbors always complained of spiders and scorpions, but luckily we never had to deal with that. I would FREAK!

Oh my gosh. Yes, I'd call the pest control place in a heartbeat. You can't be having your kids play with black widows! I'm so glad you found that one before your son did!

:Another former Arizonan here (hi guys!). Where I live in CA now doesn't have many critters so it's n/a, but in AZ it was scorpions, spiders and kissing bugs
and I chose to have an environmentally-minded company come out and spray. I'd have preferred not to, but venomous little critters don't make good roommates, especially for kids. You can check up on your door seals, caulk any cracks, store firewood outside far from doors, etc, but light spraying is a safety net to catch those that do get in. Little things, like being sure they use the least toxic methods available and having them use streaming sprays rather than aerosols, make a difference.
Also keep in mind that black widows are retiring and tend to hide in spots that are not often disturbed, so cleaning out-of-the-way areas will probably help too. Good luck!

:We had what we "lovingly" referred to as "Black Widow City" in our backyard. The previous owners kept a big cord of wood in the back that just became a haven for the little buggers. After having a similar experience as you, I demanded we get a pest control company! Inside my home I get as natural as I can manage, but when it comes to poisionous insects near where my dcs play?! DIE, THEY MUST ALL DIE!!!!! They pest control & burning all the wood has DRAMATICALLY reduced the population! Good luck w/ a choice!
