Quite a few WAHMs use something like this:

ETA: It gets really good reviews on patterreview.com, and Joanns.com

I recently got a serger for my b-day and was looking at buying this one. However, I lucked out and found a used one in EC for about 1/2 the cost (including shipping), so I used the other $$ in my budget for thread, fabric, etc

Singer Finishing Touch serger: $199.00 at Sewing in USA

This is a basic serger machine that will do either a 3-thread or 4-thread stitch (two threads for the "overlock" on the edge of the fabric and either 1 or 2 lines of straight stitch as well). The machine I use is an older version of this same model and it works great!
