For Those of You Afraid of OCM

I wash my face with homemade honey and green tea facewash, and I luurve it, so even tho' I was intrigued by the Oil Cleansing Method, I didn't want to change my good thing going on. Plus, I was a little afraid of OCM, I've been indoctrinated with the whole "oil is bad" propaganda, and it sounded like doing OCM right was kind of time consuming.

Then I read the recent thread about OCM and blackhead removal, and was determined to see for myself. Still afraid, I recruited DH to experiment on. DH is an oil slick with awful nose blackheads (almost as awful as mine ).

On his wet face, I applied maybe 2 tablespoons of OCM mixture (75% castor oil, 25% EVOO, plus a few capsules worth of Vitamin E oil) and let it sit for just a couple of minutes. Then I got some baking soda, mixed it with a little water to make a paste, and gently rubbed it on over the oil. Then I took a warm wash cloth and scrubbed his face clean.

Holy Cow! I could not BELIEVE what came out of that man's face. I really should have taken pictures. He had two pimples next to his eyebrow that came out , no more yellow head, and not at inflamed like after they've been picked- they were less pink and irritated than before. His nose looked so much better, but it also looked like a lot of the blackheads that were still there had "risen to the surface" if that makes sense, without coming all the way out. So I did this again, to just his nose, oil, baking soda, and washcloth and it worked just as well in round two- a whole bunch more blackheads came out. His nose has never looked so clear. It's incredible. I told him I was going to facial him again tonight, and he was agreeable. (That in itself is a miracle, because every time I've tried to put a mask or a Biore strip or Retin A on him, he's b*tched the entire time.)

So then of course I had to do this to myself, and it worked just as well on me.

The moral of my story is: I'm not going to give up honey as an everyday facewash, but I am going to use OCM and baking soda the way I used to do a clay mask and a Biore strip (maybe once a week or so) because it works so.much.better. to clean out clogged pores and blackheads. I stopped the mask/Biore strip business about 4 months ago when I began my new, almost all natural skin care routine, because my skin looked better than it ever had, so what was the point, right? But now, I think I'm ready for even BETTER skin! Woo hoo!

I used to do a fake OCM with coconut oil. I just wet my face, put a squirt of coconut oil on my face and used the pads of my fingers in circular motions as though it was regular facial cleanser. I would rinse with warm water (not anywhere near hot, I noticed the hotter the water, the more sensitive my skin got and I broke out), and then pat my skin dry with a towel. Whatever oil was left on my face, I smoothed into my skin, and in about ten minutes, it got absorbed, or it was just good for overnight moisture. The next day, my skin was always nice and smooth and radiant. I haven't done the coconut thing in a while since for a while the bottle I had was clogging, but it's warmer now, I can probably go back to doing that every few days.

I usually do honey, honey & baking soda, or honey/baking soda/drops of tea tree oil (if I'm having problem skin -- like right now since I'm on hormonal medication temporarily before surgery) for a nightly facial wash.

I have gone back and forth with the OCM. First I tried just castor oil but a couple of days later I would break out terribly - which I guess it was working since it was causing my skin to purge. I have also experimented with 50/50 castor and olive oil, that works really well then I follow with either honey or my oat flour/salt scrub...lately I have been mixing my oat mix and honey.

If I can convince dh I think I might try your routine on him, hehe

I have GOT to try this again. My face is very oily, but when I've tried the OCM method in the past, my face felt great for about 3 days...then oil slick again. I think I am going to try this as Leta said (like a weekly facial). I hope it works! This oily skin of mine is sooooo annoying :

I tried it for a few months. I loved it because my skin got less oily, but I started getting cystic acne in places that I usually don't get them. So something was clogging my pores. I did about 75% castor oil to 25% EVOO, with a few drops of TTO. Someone mentioned that the EVOO could've gone rancid, that I should've added vitamin E when I opened the bottle.

It was also too time-consuming for me. I never noticed any blackheads coming out either.

I'm doing OCM in the morning and honey at night. I'm using about 75% caster oil and about 25% jojoba oil. I also occasionally use a toner when I just need a little freshening up. I also use a bit of TTO on spots when needed.

So far it is working really, really well. I have had a couple pimples, but NOTHING like before. It's been about two weeks now. I will have to try the BS.

my face is getting more and more clogged with blackheads pimples are maybe 5-6 a omnth and don't bug me much. for me it is the plethora of blackheads and the large pores rough looking skin.

I've done honey and oat flour scrubs and OCM and nothing had ever been very good.

I'm gonna try your exact routine. maybe I need fresh EVO and castor oil though

Leta, maybe it was you... I posted in the Wash Your Face With Honey thread trying to find the post about the gt/honey face wash. It was 50:50 but I'm wondering, now that I've finally bummed a few tea bags off my mom, how strong the tea should be. Can you help? :

I use a quart of honey at a time, so I make green tea using five teabags and a quart of boiling water, and I let it steep about 20 minutes. In other words, the green tea is STRONG. HTH

Well, last night I did everything it says in the original post (except i used pure castor oil instead of a blend). I didn't notice any effect on the blackheads, but mine are really tiny anyway so maybe I just couldn't see the difference. However, today I have a bunch of pimples forming! : Not the whitehead kind, but the deep kind that are way below the surface and itch. *sigh* I'll just tell myself the castor oil did a good job sucking the yuckiness up towards the surface...

Hmmm....I have been reading about using castor oil and as I have some I wanted to try it tonight but now I'm scared of breaking out again. I posted last week about facial cleansing and got great info. on using the honey or combinations. I like how my skin feels after using it and noticed that it has been deep cleansing and I broke out some. So am I just going to bring myself misery by using the castor oil and having more blemishes to contend with?

Thanks Leta!! I only pilfered 3 tea bags but I also only have a small jar of honey. I'll see how many oz the honey is and go from there. I may have to steal more bags from my mom.

Yikes! I'm sorry, people who broke out! Maybe DH and I have similar skin?

Pimples make me sad. :

I've decided to answer my own question and use dh's face as well to try this method out. He really enjoyed it and I see that it is bringing gunk up but not stressing his skin out. I'm going to do it over the next few days and then try it myself.

Hmmm...funny when you use your partner's face as a guinea pig!

Haha! I don't think my husband would let me get away with that But everybody says the castor oil is a good deep-cleanser, so I'm not holding it against you that I'm having issues. Maybe I should just keep doing it for a few days to get all the nastiness out.
