Washer Cleaning cycle for HE washer?

I just bought an HE washer. In the manual, it says to do a cleaning cycle once a month w/ liquid bleach. I prefer not to use bleach at all. Anybody use an alternative method to clean the washer?

Try running a cup or two of vinegar through it instead.

i've run our he unit mostly with the baking soda/vinegar washing combo, and then every 6 weeks or so, plain vinegar cleaning cycle. the he pair is, oh, seven months old, so it's kinda hard to tell if it's made any difference, but i don't have the complaints of odor that some users have. i also wipe out the door gaskets really well with a vinegar and water solution and run that rag through on the cleaning cycle. that area will get really funky on a front loader if it's not cleaned!!

Do you put the vinegar in the bleach dispenser? What about the baking soda?
