Induction protocol?

Hi all....

I would really appreciate some comments from those in the know!

I am 34 wks and scheduled for an induction between 37 and 38 wks. Without letting me go into my med history, let me just say that my OB comes highly recommended from these boards and is known to be as pro-natural as they come. I have had a pit-induction before and was traumatized by it. When I was told that I have to be induced again, I talked to my OB that I was scared of pit and was sure I'd ask for an epi like I did the last time. She said they can start me with a foley bulb the night before if my cervix is high and closed, or they can break my water to see how far that would take us. She said that if a night of this doesnt work they can start with low dose pit and see how I do.

I was wondering if any of you have an insight on this or any advice on what I should do to make sure my labor kickstarts without bringing in the pit i.e. should I walk a lot with broken water in the hospital or what?

I would be very grateful for any responses. Thanks in advance!

For the truly medically indicated inductions - I like foley bulbs. Gotta say, though, your doc must be more talented than me to get one in if you're still high and closed. : Seriously, a foley bulb overnight has worked for me.

Breaking the water would not be my first choice. Especially since you want to keep other things, like fingers and foley bulbs, out of the vagina after the waters are broken. Some hospitals won't let you walk after the water breaks, too, so ask about that first:

: I tried induction by AROM once, I learned what infection is all about the hard way. Plus, station and position of baby matters A LOT when you consider AROM. If baby is still floating, there is a possibility of prolapsed cord. Also, it's best that the baby is in the best possition possible for birth, breaking the water too soon can make it harder for the baby to get in that good position making labor longer and probably harder.

I was also induced with Pit when AROM failed to send me into labor. (We only waited a few hours.) And since they did AROM, I was now "on the clock" to deliver my baby. I'm with ya, I did NOT like pit, but the foley sounds good if they can use it. (I think you gotta be a little dialated to get it in.) Then go with pit. Do some home remedies before your induction date. Sex is great for riping the cervix. You can also break out your breastpump. (Can't remember how often to use the breastpump, but I know it's best if you have a double.)

Then try to relax as much as possible. Laugh and keep your supporters and encouragers close by. Good Luck!
