Has anyone done this before? What is the easiest way to mimic the night sky on my son's bedroom ceiling? I have tried those sticker stars before but they don't work well and fade rather quickly. I was thinking of getting some fabric, black or dark blue and stapling it onto the ceiling but first I need to put the stars on the fabric. Is there a specific paint that this would work best with or anything else? I want to so a few constellations also. I only have a few days though I want to have it done before he gets back from camp but only had the bright idea today. Suggestions?

My ds wants me to do this and if I ever get around to it I will use a projector and paint.
I looked into the fabric, but it was going to cost too much and then there is the dust issue.
Be sure to post pics when you are done.

I would probably paint the ceiling dark blue.
I know they make glow-in-the dark paint, but I think that will also fade quickly. So maybe just use some opaque white paint to do the stars, probably just as dots not a traditional star shape, or just go with shiny stickers. You could even use those little gold star stickers. They come in multiple colors. Silver ones would be nice.

We painted DS's whole room dark blue then I painted stars on with silver and gold craft acrylic paint. It looks best if you do the stares in clusters. I tried the GITD paint and it wasn't very impressive.
BTW the stars take 2 thick coats against the dark blue.

If painting is out...
I would probably use fabric puffy paint and do dots in constellations.
You might also just go for utter simplicity. Its pretty common to find fabric with small stars, especially this time of year. I would just look for something that has a somewhat random pattern as oppossed to large stars in a grid. It wouldn't have specific constellations, but it sure would be easy and probably cheap. I got some fabric like this in traditional Christmas colors a few years back and it was only a couple of dollars a yard. It was just thin cotton, but that should do the trick.

We got some glow in the dark stickers from the science center over ten years ago, and they are still workign just fine. I like the idea of simplicity and patterned fabric if you have no luck with the GITD stickers/paint. Also, if you want to paint, you could go with the dark paint and leave some white parts in the shapes of the constellations. Good luck with getting crafty!
