Athletes and Glucose testing

My midwife says that all of her athletic mamas fail the one hour glucose screening (and do poorly on the one hour of the 3 hour test) but don't end up with GD. I am at the point of taking the test again. In my last pregnancy I failed the one hour (213) but ended up passing the 3 hour. I don't want to take the test at all, but may have some issues with the back-up OB if I refuse. I am planning a VBAC and don't want anything to jeopardize that at the 11th hour.

All three of us moms on my Masters swim team have failed the one hour despite being super physically fit and eating really well. Anyone else see their super fit or athletic moms failing the glucose screening? Any advice? I am thinking about not doing it but offering to do random sugar checks if I ever have sugar in my urine.

Thanks.

The more healthier/athletic mamas usually do not consume tons of sugar in the first place, so then when they have the 50-100 mg of glucola and then sit for an hour = bam high numbers. I had the same thing happen to me with my second pg. My numbers were not as high as yours, but I was so shocked that I "failed" my first test, I demanded a repeat 1-hour because I was not going to do the 3-hour. Well, I failed the second 1- hour and agreed with the NP I would do the 3-hour and was okay. Duh!!

I have read that unless you have a history of diabetes in your family (which is still kind of stupid since late-onset diabetes is usually because of bad choices in food/exercises/smoking/drinking), overweight, african-american, etc. you really do not need to worry about it.

Diet and exericse is the best way to treat any high blood sugar, so it sounds that you are on the right track.

I think a couple days of food and exercise logging with intermittent prick tests is much more informative and far less dangerous than the GTT. Because the urine dipstick tests are so crude I wouldn't want to wait for them to indicate a problem before testing further. Brix (or is it Brax?) testing is quite accurate.

for the test you need to carb load the week before and be eating 150 gm per day. if you are careful about what you eat and eat on the low carb side of things you are not going to pass a GTT without the carb loading first- it is a standard instruction for the test but many places don't remember to recommend it or think that most people eat too many carbs all the time. also you need to be careful to not fast too long fast about 8 hrs and no more than 12 because it will trigger a glycogen release
