natural insect repellent?

Anyone have any good recipes that actually WORKS?! We are going camping
with our horses to Alleghany State park with our 11 month old this
weekend and I want something potent. lol I got some California Baby
sunscreen with insect repellent in it but it's soooo expensive!! Has
anyone had any sucess with it? I have some citronella and lemongrass
EOs that I figure I could use possibly? Not sure if they are safe to
use on a babe. Even if you have a good recipe for adults. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

I don't know about making my own - though I'd think citronella and lemongrass eo would work. Before I found Burt's Bees, I tried rubbing actual lemongrass on myself and that worked, it was scratchy but it worked.

We have a terrible mosquito problem where we live; especially now that it is so hot and humid. I purchased some citronella oil and have tried it once. It seemed to work well but like I said, i've only tried it once. I do remember seeing a list of eo's that work on certain bugs on one of the two or three websites I use to buy my oils. Eucalyptus works on one kind (maybe blackflies?), lemon oil on another, etc. I THINK it was Aromaland or possibly Naturesgift. You might look on their sites and I bet they could tell you if it was safe for use on baby. I hate insect repellent but I don't like bug bites either. Oh, I also bought a citronella plant last year and rubbed the leaves of that on which did work as well.
