Where can I find info/analysis on maternal and infant mortality in the U.S.

Can anyone suggest a good source that compares U.S. maternal and infant mortality rates to the rest of the world, and maybe has some thoughtful analysis on why ours are so awful?

I know all this in my head, but would like an outside resource to pass on to a student who believes that infant mortality rates in the U.S. are so bad because the medical gods are saving so many pregnancies now that would have been miscarriages in the past.

I don't know about thoughtful analysis, but you can find some of the info you're looking for in the CIA World Factbook

Also, US specific infant and maternal mortality can be found in the NCHS section of the CDC site. It's up-to-date through 2005.

Perhaps one of the books written by Sheila Kitzinger, Floyd-Davis, Wagner etc would be helpful.

You can also probably find much of this information through the WHO website.
