One sweater I got says it is dry clean only. Can I use it to make a cover and if so, how do I wash it? Thanks

Actually, the kind of wool you need is "dry clean only". You handwash it, in a mixture of either wool wash and lanolin(you can use lansinoh nipple cream if you don't have straight lanolin), or until you get wool wash you can use a mixture of baby wash and lanolin. To do this, you need to fill a sink with COLD water and baby wash (not hot, or it will shrink the wool) and dissolve your lanolin seperately in some warm water (about a 1/2 inch to an inch strip of lanolin) . Clean the cover in the cold water and baby wash, then pour the dissolved lanolin-water over the cover (while the sweater is still in the water). To dry the cover, you should roll on a few towels to get excess water out, then lay flat to dry (I like to lay on a towel on a drying rack, seems to dry faster this way). It may sound a little complicated at first, but it's actually very easy to care for wool. You only need to wash the cover when soiled, or every couple weeks if not soiled. HTH. If you have any more questions just ask.

they say dry clean only on wool sweaters a lot because people aren't very careful when they're washing wool, so taking it to a cleaner is less risky. Like the pp said, baby shampoo or wool wash combined with lanolin makes a great wool cleaner and as long as you don't change the water temperature drastically or agitate the wool too much, you should be fine.
