Cravings and aversions

Thread Starter
For some reason I have no m/s yet (I know, I'm counting my blessings) but I certainly am having odd cravings and aversions. I have always found my own cravings/aversions and those of other preggos fascinating...want to share? Extra credit if you think you know why you crave it!

For me:

Craving:

Anything spicy, especially hot sauce...
especially buffalo chicken wings (I am a vegetarian, and yes this happened last PG as well!)
Apples
Mineral water (last PG as well)--I assume I need more calcium/magnesium
Baked potatoes
Mexican food
French fries : (One early sign of pg, even before I tested, was that I got an insane FF craving; I went out and bought a large fries from the Wendy's near my office, all the while feeling very suspicious of myself. I had never even been there before in all the time I've worked here.) I assume this is a calorie-need thing.

Yucko:
Oatmeal (??)
Luna Bars (I ate one yesterday and regretted it all day)
Anything excessively sweet

So far, nothing much going on here in this department. With my other successful pregnancies I had a lot more aversions and cravings right from the start. I also would gag when I brushed my teeth, occasionally even more than gagging.

In the past my main aversion would be eggs, which I normally love. Also, anything that I took time to cook would gross me out. I'd do a lot of crock pot meals, and things with very simple prep. so I wouldn't have to handle them much.

What's weird now, as in my other pregnancies is that I get VERY hungry. Sometimes I can eat a lot of food, sometimes I can eat only a few bites. Either way I get equally hungry. There is just no way to predict how much I'll be able to eat.

Craving: absolutely nothing. Only three things taste good: turmeric, cinnamon and nuts (not seeds) The smell of coffee beans.

Aversions: garlic, onions, lemon, gravy, potatoes, pasta, rice (even the smell is turning my stomach), anything fatty or greasy or fried in any way. Cake, cheesecake, custards, baked custards, chocolate, caramel, tea, coffee, herbal tea. Anything sweetened in any way. The smell of milk. Biscuits. Bacon, sausage, meats of all kind, especially the fatty ones. Oh, and tomatoes. And because everything I cook contains garlic, tomatoes or chocolate, I'm screwed

Fundamentally, I'm living off yorkshire puddings and vegetables at the moment, because nothing else tastes good

Craving: Nothing at this point

Aversions: Any kind of meat makes me sick

I hate being around greasy food, which sucks, because I work at Sonic's!

So far I am suddenly extremely adverse to Mexican. I had a mexican casserole in the freezer that I defrosted last night and it's been so hard to eat it. DH is going to have to finish it up. I think it's the beans which is bad because they are such good sources of protein.

I'm also having trouble drinking water...

I'm not allowed to be adverse to greasy food until after we move next week because I know we'll be eating our fair share of takeout and fast food while we don't have a kitchen. :

nacho ice cream sundae....

tortilla chips, caramel praline ice cream, that gooey greasy cheese dip from convience stores, and jalapenos. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

and I usually hate that fake cheese!

I have had no cravings so far, but am hating the smell of any kind of Seafood (I work next to a seafood resturant, so I don't know how I am going to get through the summer!)
And no morning sickness so far, which I am feeling very lucky!

Well no actual morning sickness yet, just days where I have that general yuckiness feeling. Craving today: potato salad. GOD WAS IT GOOD! And I'm completely living on fresh fruits and veggies. Mostly veggies. I'm a veggie-maniac!
No real yucko foods yet, but I usually have an insane sweet tooth and I"m totally not interested now. Just don't even think of the stuff.

Hooray! No m/s yet!

Cravings: Iced tea, lemon water, hot dogs , Dippin Dots ice cream, nachos

Hates: Meat (except Hebrew National hot dogs), eggs, everyday smells

I have never been able to eat eggs while pregnant. And handling raw meat just makes me cringe. Plus, my sense of smell is so acute that yesterday at church I could smell the breath of the people behind me as they were singing! YUCK!

I've been having this problem. It's awful. As someone very focussed on oral hygiene, this is a nightmare. Dh and I bought some lemon flavored toothpaste for me to try.. No go. It still has a minty quality. Yech!

Me too exactly. I'm normally all about the sweets all the time. I used to eat at least a bite of chocolate every day. But I don't even care anymore. Just doesn't sound good.

I know what you mean! Smells! Everywhere! I smelled our roommate's towel from about a foot away and I almost yarfed. It stank like mildew so bad. And now I can smell the water when I turn on the faucet. Eew.

Cravings:

Tang (it's vile when I'm not pregnant, but when I am I can't get enough)
Meat of any kind, particularly bacon and lamb.
Brussels sprouts (once again, I HATE them when I'm not pregnant)
Citrus fruits

Aversions:

Coffee ( -- I can't get enough of it when I'm not pregnant)
Most sweets
Oddly enough, anything terribly high in simple carbs. Usually i love mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and cream of wheat during pregnancy but this time the idea fills me with foreboding... I think I just need more protein this pregnancy for some reason. Last night I ate about a pound of salmon and half a pound of brussels sprouts for dinner.

Hey mama's who are coping well with toothpaste, what about the Tom's of Maine kids pastes? They have strawberry and grape. I know that the strawberry is pretty mild, not like the Crest kind (or whatever other Mainstream children's brands there are).

Everything sounds and smells good to me, and I am just craving all kinds of things, but when I eat I can barely force it down. I go to sleep hungry, wake up hungry, read a book hungry, etc. etc., but nothing tastes good enough to actually eat. And I keep thinking I smell cigarette smoke or a dirty diaper everywhere I go. I'm not sick to my stomach in the conventional way, I just feel off. :

EMMMM brussel sprouts, thanks for the idea

I am all about cravings and aversions at this stage (7 wks-ish). due to m/s my aversion list is longer than the cravings.

Cravings:

Salty things, like pretzels and salty soups (miso esp)
Cheese (but I can't have it due to ds's food allergies, I nurse him)
Watermelon (I had this last time too)

Aversions:

COFFEE (dh asked me what it smells like to me and the best description is "dirty acid" ) I LOVED coffee before too.
Salmon/fish
sweet things, particularly cookies and chocolate
meat
peppers and onions (we had them sauteed for dinner yesterday, ugh)
orange juice (my toddler wants it every morning for breakfast)

OK, my yorkshire puddings and nuts and seeds are gone now.
I'm now living off beetroot and vimto (a blackcurrant, redcurrant and raspberry flavoured fruit squash) and not much else. I swear, this baby is going to be born with purple hair at this rate...

I have been eating a lot of homemade curry. I made chicken soup today-YUM! Raw foods sound gross.

I haven't had any really strong cravings or aversions like I did with my first pregnancy. With ds my strong cravings were apple and orange juice and I had an aversion to everything to the point where I could not do any food prep or grocery shopping at all.

So far I have developed a slight aversion to coffee. I am a big coffee drinker and planned on switching to decaf like I did last time. But suddenly this week the thought of drinking coffee leaves a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach so I haven't been making it. I wonder if I made it, would I be able to drink it? Or would the funny feeling persist so that I wouldn't be able to stomach it. I don't know.

The only little craving I can think of is that I haven't bought pickles since I was pregnant last (and I ate a lot of them during my last pregnancy) but before I took the test I was shopping and I thought, "You know what I haven't had in awhile? PICKLES." And bought two big jars. Dh laughed hysterically when he saw them and called, "You are SO pregnant." but I dismissed him saying, "I just LIKE pickles, that's all." Sure enough, BFP a few days later and both jars of pickles are loooong gone.

I am also buying and drinking orange juice again but I'm not having the same desperate "I need orange juice now" feelings; I'm mostly using it because I learned last time that when I feel a little shaky or unwell a glass of OJ is a really quick way to turn things around.
