Yes--nurse, nurse, nurse, and like the previous poster said, sunlight. We recently had the jaundice experience with our son (milk took it's sweet time coming in) and needed to use the "bilibed" for a few days. The ped also reco'd 5 -minute exposures to bright, natural sunlight when we wanted to take him out of the bed. I also did a big MDC no-no and supplimented with formula using a syringe. Our little guy was a drowsy nurser and would only work at the breast for 5 to ten minutes at a time. I really resented using formula and started pumping after feedings in order to encourage milk production and so that I could suppliment with my own milk. Once I was able to pump enough breastmilk to suppliment nursings things started looking up for us. We really wanted to get over this fast because taking him to the peds office for daily bili levels was awful.

Wow! So much has happened in our DDC since I was last able to check-it's wonderful to see all the birth announcements.

I thought I'd update really quick. Joseph and I had a really tough first few weeks. He had jaundice like I said earlier which made him sleepy and really uninterested in eating. After we got home I thought things were going a lot better, but he started screaming every time I offered him the breast and he wouldn't nurse. We spent a lot of time with several great lactation consultants here who quickly discovered that he has a tongue tie which was making it really difficult for him to eat and since he hadn't been feeding very well my milk supply was really low. We had to supplement with banked milk and finger feed him. I really worked hard to make sure he didn't have any formula because DH has a history of severe food allergies. I pumped like crazy to help milk supply and was taking More Mother's Milk to try to help the situation. After he started eating really well for a few days he started screaming in pain after eating and we discovered that he was reacting to the dairy in my diet.

So, needless to say we've had a long and difficult journey but the good news is that things are finally going wonderfully. Joseph still won't eat without a nipple shield, but both doctors think he will grow out needing it soon since it is not too bad-I just hope it's soon since I don't like the shield. Joseph is eating like a champ and is gaining almost an ounce a day now, so I'm feeling like a better mommy (I had a very rough time with several huge guilt trips over the breastfeeding troubles even though I knew it would take us some time to learn.).

Wow, good work mama! It always impresses me to see the lengths people will go to in order to successfully BF! WTG! My DS is also slightly tongue tied, I'm curious, did you have the clipping done or are you just waiting to see if he outgrows it? We didn't have the clip done but I'm wondering if we should look into it.

We have not clipped his tongue yet-we're hoping he outgrows it soon. I hope that he will be able to eat without the nipple shield soon, but if not we may look into having his tongue clipped. Right now I can only get him to eat without the shield for maybe a minute or two before he gets mad. But he eats like a champ with it and neither doctor is concerned yet.

How is your little guy, Jilian? It's just been in the last 2 days that I've been able to get online so I haven't had a chance to check the carepages yet. He's been in our thoughts and prayers though!

so glad to hear hes doing better~ especially with the feedings! a friend just dealt with her second child to have a tongue tie and once it was fixed (they knew to look right away this time) feedings have been great...hope youre still having such success! congrats to you guys!
