ARG - I hate velcro. Help!

I'm trying to finish my first halfway decent looking cloth diaper and need help.

First, I'm going to order Applix and I hope someone tells me that it will work better then Velcro. But for my instant gratification purposes...The problem Im having is that if I sew the velcro so I can see it my thread keeps breaking. It's really really pi**ing me off. I tried turning the dipe fabric side up but I cant sew the velcro well when I cant see it! It looks like a 3 year old who got hopped up on jolt and airheads.

Help!

Hugs! You may have the same problems with aplix, but here is a hint when you are sewing the hook on, go SLOW, it helps stop the thread from breaking so much!

Are you doing zig-zag or a straight stitch? I find that zig-zag "catches" less, although if I just go really, really slow, I don't have too many problems with a straight stitch.

If you've been doing alot of sewing lately, you might be in need of a new needle, as well.

How are you doing your velcro? I have been doing more of a Bummis tab lately with hook on one side and loop on the other. This seems to work great for me. I sew on the hook side, and I leave the hook down.

Check your needle, make sure you have good thread, and go slow!

Thank you ladies!

I was using a straight stitch, but I probably was trying to go too fast. I tried replacing my needle with no luck, so I decided to try putting some tissue paper on top and that worked like a charm! I can just tear it away after.

I second the go slow vote! The same thing happened to me when I started. If I go slow the thread doesn't catch as much and if it does I see it before it breaks.

I was having this problem too until I switched to a zigzag stitch and then I havent had a problem since. (making diapers from diaperkits.com)

When I first bought velcro, I bought that crap with the sticky stuff on the under side... big mistake!!! hahaha, but I couldn't waste it. So I was given the advice to put lotion on the top of the velcro before sewing, and it did the trick. Although now I know better, and I will never buy that again lol hahahahahaha!!!

Sewing slow, doing a zigzag stitch, and using 100% poly thread (like Guttermans) works great, but it sounds like you solved it by using tissue paper! I heard toilet paper works great too.
