Remedies for abcess?

I'm assuming I have an abcess. A tooth that has been giving me problems on and off for a very long time (the filling has fallen out and part of the tooth has cracked off) is really bothering me right now. And that whole side of my jaw is swollen, so I'm guessing it's an abcess.

What can I do to take care of it? I have no dental insurance and can't afford to just go to any dentist, and the one program that I could "afford" won't even be able to get me in for at BEST 2 months.

oh, im in the same boat, here is what i just posted in "im pregnant"

i think i am getting a tooth abscess (not fun) and i am taking advil, my MW is out till next week. is advil safe during pregnancy?

i know they will give me antibiotics for the abscess, are there better ones for pregnancy? or do you have any advice on alternatives?

did anyone have to go throught this: ?

I hope you get some ideas - soon and sorry to hear you are in pain. my whole jaw hurts/aches.

I did use hydrogen peroxide to rinse with several times a day and it seemed to really help, but my tooth abscess was leaking into my mouth (sorry i know thats really gross). if your jaw is swollen then the infection is under the gums/trapped. the only other thing i would suggest would be to go to the emergency room and get treatment there for antibiotics (the dentist wont do any work until after an abscess is taken care of anyway)

good luck.

Thank you! I'm going to see if my dad can get antibiotics for me (he works at a clinic). Maybe one of those super 3-day antibiotics. I'm also going to try garlic, but I'm going to be a little un-crunchy and go with traditional antibiotics. I worked today and it was horrible and I have to work for like 8 more days straight.

Gross that it's leaking? Sure, but most of us are parents here so I think we've seen much more gross things. I almost wish mine would leak, to relieve some of the pressure, ugh!

Tell me about it. Did you see my post? I just found out I have an abscess. Went to the dentist today. He looked at it, took an xray then gave me a prescription for pain killers (take as needed) and antibiotics (1 wk). I have an appointment next Monday to start a root canal.

He mentioned that for a toothache like that you should take Advil. He didn't say why. Hope you get some relief soon.
